Reading, PA- There is a first time for everything, and in the case of the Akron Aeros' four-game series against the Reading Fightin' Phils, there's a second time as well.
After claiming their first ninth-inning comeback of the season on Thursday night in the series opener, the Aeros did the same thing again on Sunday afternoon. This time, a two-run rally in the ninth was followed by an RBI double by Giovanny Urshela in the 10th to post a 7-6 win over the Phils at First Energy Stadium.
The Aeros (19-18) took three out of four games from the Phils (14-21). The road seems to agree with the Aeros of late, as the team has claimed eight wins in its last 11 away games. That has helped the Aeros climb to second place in the EL West, three games behind first-place Erie.
In the 10th inning Sunday, Quincy Latimore drew a lead-off walk from Phils righthander Colby Shreve (0-1), who was making his first appearance for Reading since being called up from Class-A. Two consecutive, slow groundouts moved Latimore to third. Urshela then blasted a Shreve pitch deep to the gap in right field to drive in Latimore and make it 7-6.
Jose Flores (3-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings to finish the game. He worked around a lead-off hit in the ninth, and then tossed a perfect 10th to nail down the win. He struck out four and lowered his ERA to 0.96.
Akron trailed 6-4 going to the ninth, but just like Thursday, Urshela led off the inning with a single off Reading closer Kyle Simon. After Jose Ramirez flied out, Tyler Holt was hit by a pitch. Simon struck out Chun Chen for the second out, but then uncorked back-to-back wild pitches, the second of which scored Urshela to make it 6-5. Jesus Aguilar followed with a single up the middle to score Holt and tie the game, 6-6.
Up until the Reading series, the Aeros had been 0-15 when trailing after eight innings.
Urshela extended his hitting streak to eight games, matching the longest on the team this year. Aguilar blasted a solo home run to center in the fourth inning, his fourth of the year. He increased his league-leading RBI total to 32.
Righthander Brett Brach started for Akron, and was charged with five runs, four earned, over five innings. He walked one and struck out three in his second start of the season for the Aeros.
The Aeros will continue the road trip on Monday night at 6:35, with the first of three games against the Binghamton Mets. LHP Matt Packer (1-4, 3.72) will start for Akron, while RHP Rafael Montero (3-3, 3.54) will make the start for the B-Mets.
