Urruti's Goal Lifts 10-Man Austin FC Over CF Montréal
June 18, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Austin FC News Release
MONTRÉAL - Despite going down to 10 men prior to halftime, Austin FC rallied to record a 1-0 away win over CF Montréal on Saturday night at Stade Saputo, courtesy of a 67th-minute goal from Maxi Urruti. The result moves Austin FC into second place in the MLS Western Conference.
Scoring chances were hard to come by for both sides in the first half. Each team was close once: Sebastián Driussi's shot went inches wide of the post in the 19th minute, and Brad Stuver made a smart stop to deny Kei Kamara later on.
The Verde & Black were then dealt a blow just before the break, when Dani Pereira was sent off for a second yellow card offense.
Stuver made another incredible save on Kamara early in the second half, diving to his right to deny the striker from point-blank range. Austin then nearly took the lead in stunning fashion in the 58th minute, when Diego Fagundez fired a powerful shot off the post after Driussi picked him out with a through ball.
However, it would not take much longer for the Verde & Black to open the scoring. An excellent Jon Gallagher cross from the left flank found Urruti, who took a quality touch to control the ball and finished with a delicate chip over the onrushing Montréal goalkeeper Sebastian Breza.
After grabbing the lead, the team put in a stalwart defensive shift to protect it. In the final minutes, Stuver recorded his third key stop of the match, scrambling to tip a blocked shot from getting over the goalline. Austin maintained its advantage until the final whistle to earn its fourth away win of the season.
