Uriegas to the Mound as Mallards Look for Two-Game Sweep
July 29, 2011 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Madison Mallards News Release
WAUSAU, WI - July 29, 2011. Estevan Uriegas (Texas A&M) will take the mound Friday as the Madison Mallards get set to play the Wisconsin Woodchucks at 6:35 p.m. in the finale of a two-game series at Athletic Park. The Mallards will be attempting a two-game sweep of the Woodchucks following a 12-6 victory Thursday night.
Madison's offense was electric Thursday and carried the team despite giving up six runs and committing three defensive errors. The offense will look to keep their hot hitting going after steallar performances from Justin Parr (Illinois), Travis Parker (St. Louis), and Michael Handel (Minnesota) in game one.
After slumping at the plate to start the second half, the Mallards are once again near the top of major team offensive categories, a sure sign of good things to come from the hitters.
Over the past week, seven batters have hit .300 or better, led by Andrew Wasmund (Madison College), who is hitting .429. Mike McQuillan (Iowa), Nate Theunissen (Central Michigan), Jones, Andrew Barna (Davidson), Parr, and Jordan Owen (Tennessee - Martin) round out the group.
Uriegas will try to keep the Woodchucks at bay after the Mallards allowed six runs on 13 hits a night ago. Uriegas has arguable been the Mallards' best pitcher as of late, winning in his last two starts. He is 2-1 this season with a 1.82 earned run average in 24.2 innings spanning six appearances. In his second season with Madison, Uriegas has never beaten the Woodchucks in two appearances. He is 0-0 with both appearances coming in relief.
Aaron Gates (Pepperdine) gets the starting nod for the Woodchucks. He is 0-0 this season in three starts with a 6.43 ERA. He has not faced the Mallards yet this season. Gates has also appeared as a batter in eight games. In 26 at bats, he is hitting .269 with three RBI and a run scored.
After Friday's contest, the Mallards will return to the "Duck Pond" to begin a three-game series with the La Crosse Loggers. Friday will also be the Home Talent All-Star Game at Warner Park. The game is scheduled to start at 7:05 p.m.
