Honkers Swept in Willmar

July 29, 2011 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Rochester Honkers News Release

(Rochester, MN) - The Rochester Honkers would seek a win to split the series in Willmar on Friday night, but would come up empty handed, losing 8-5 to the Stingers. The loss lowers the Honkers record to 10-10 in the second half and pushes them 4.5 games behind the Alexandria Beetles for first place in the North Division.

The Honkers would jump ahead in the second inning when Reid Roper (Fr, Illinois) hit his third home run of the season, putting the Honkers up 1-0. Willmar would respond in the bottom half of the same inning scoring three runs on three hits. The Honkers would tie it up in the fourth and take the lead in the fifth going up 4-3, but that would be the last lead the Honkers would have. A three run sixth inning by the Stingers would prove too much for Rochester and give the Stingers the victory.

Aaron Siefken (Jr, Bethany Lutheran) got the start for the Honkers, making his ninth start of the season. Siefken had found success against the Stingers early in the season but would be less fortunate tonight, allowing 14 hits and seven runs in the game. Siefken would get the loss, falling to 2-5 on the season.

Aside from Roper's home run, the Honkers were also led at the plate by Davy Wright (So, TCU) and Erik Mattingly (Jr, Creighton) who both had a two hit game. Wright would go 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk and a run scored, and Mattingly would go 2-for-4 at the plate. The three would account for over half of the Honkers eight hits.

The Honkers now travel to St. Cloud to play four games against the River Bats in two days, making up games rained out from the June series in St. Cloud. Game one of the double header will start at 6:05 pm, with game number two starting thirty minutes following the conclusion of the game. All four games will be seven innings.
