Upper Valley Bests Mainers Night Before All-Star Game
July 16, 2016 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Sanford Mainers News Release
SANFORD - It took a late inning rally to secure the win, but the Upper Valley Nighthawks (11-19) were able to put away the Mainers (17-14) 8-4, with a four run rally in the 9th.
The Nighthawks went up 4-3 in the 8th on a Trent Liemkuehler (St. Louis) sacrifice fly, scoring Joseph Denison (Troy) from third, who had singled earlier in the inning and advanced to 3rd on a stolen base and a wild pitch.
Upper Valley broke through for good in the top of the 9th with four runs on three hits and two major Mainers errors, in addition to two walks. The Mainers did respond with one run in the 9th, but it was not enough to threaten.
Upper Valley scored consistently early in the contest. The Nighthawks scored in the 1st on a Liemkuehler single, and again in the 2nd when Alex Hanson (St. Petersburg) knocked in Walker Grisanti (Vanderbilt), who reached on a fielding error. James Morisano (St. Louis) scored in the 4th for Upper Valley on an Austin Embler (North Carolina Greensboro) single as well.
Sanford struck back in the 3rd however to tie the ballgame up at three. Shaine Hughes (Monmouth) doubled to lead off the inning, before Jordan Powell (Rhode Island) knocked him in on a two-bagger, to make it a one-run game. Tristan Chari (Vanderbilt) tied the game up with a single slapped through the left side to score Powell, and even the game up.
The Mainers have July 17 off, although Will Tribucher (Michagan), Ako Thomas (Michigan), Zach Jancarski (Maryland) and Nelson Mompierre (Miami Dade) will be heading to Newport to take part in the NECBL All-Star game. Hughes will be the Mainers participant in the home run derby, with festivities beginning at 2 PM, and the game beginning at 6:35 PM. Mainers broadcaster Tom Porter has the play-by-play call for the Northern Division on the NECBL Broadcast Network.
The Mainers resume play on July 18 when they visit the Keene Swamp Bats for the first time this season. First pitch is set for 6:30 PM, with on-air coverage beginning on the NECBL Broadcast Network and The Legends in Sanford 1220 AM and 102.3 FM at 6:15 PM from Alumni Field.
