Mainers Comeback to Topple Winnipesaukee

July 16, 2016 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Sanford Mainers News Release

SANFORD - As has been the case in the month of July, the Sanford Mainers (17-13) used one big inning to master the Winnipesaukee Muskrats (14-14) 8-5 on a muggy night from Goodall Park.

The Mainers entered the 5th inning, trailing the Muskrats 4-0 as Winnipesaukee had scored early in the 1st. With one man away in the frame, Ako Thomas (Michigan) doubled, followed by Shaine Hughes (Monmouth) who walked and Todd Czinege (Villanova) who knocked in Thomas to put Sanford on the scoreboard. Mike Landestoy (Texas Christian) promptly doubled to empty the bases, and make the score 4-3.

Nelson Mompierre (Miami Dade) then doubled in Landestoy to tie the game at four. Sanford would load the bases on a Johnny Slater (Michigan) walk, and then a Thomas two-RBI single to put the Mainers on top 7-4.

The Moose got an insurance run in the 8th, after Zach Jancarski (Maryland) singled, and Hughes doubled him in to give the Mainers their final run total.

Dan Wilson (North Carolina Asheville) was solid in the start, although he was not helped out by his defense. He went five-and-two-thirds, allowing three hits and four runs, one earned, two walks and four strike outs in the win. Wilson allowed three of his four runs in the 1st, after a two out error extended the inning and gave Winnipesaukee a golden opportunity.

Cole Whitney (St. Johns) earned the save in an inning of no-hit work, while Muskrats reliever George Lamb (Rio Grande) took the loss. Lamb recorded no outs in his relief appearance, allowing two hits, three runs, three earned, three walks and two strike outs.

Sanford now finds themselves in first place in the NECBL North, leading the Valley Blue Sox by one game, and three teams by two games. In 2015, the Mainers used the week prior to the NECBL's All-Star game to propel themselves into the top part of the division, as they have this season.

The Mainers remain at home tomorrow as they host the Upper Valley Nighthawks for the second time this season. The Mainers are 1-1 against the Nighthawks, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 PM and pregame activities beginning at 6:15 on the NECBL Broadcast Network.
