United Way Brings #UNIGNORABLE Campaign to the Guelph Storm
February 19, 2020 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Guelph Storm News Release
(Guelph) United Way Guelph Wellington Dufferin has teamed up with the Guelph Storm to bring fans the #UNIGNORABLE game on February 21st, to help make local issues like poverty, mental health and social isolation #UNIGNORABLE. Sponsored by Sleeman Breweries, fans will become more aware of the issues impacting our community and learn how they can unleash their Local Love to address them.
"In our everyday lives, important local social issues can often be ignored or go unnoticed because we are busy and tend to focus on our day-to-day, not so much on the issues that impact our communities. Often the issues seem big and complex and we don't know how we, as individuals, can take action or make a difference," said Colleen Murdoch, director of communications with United Way. "Our goal is to make people aware of these issues, make them unignorable, so that people can name them and come together to find solutions."
The game will feature information about local issues that United Way and community partners work to find solutions for, issues like poverty, hunger, mental health and social isolation. There will also be opportunities for the community to help make a difference, including bringing or buying a pair of mittens, which will be donated to community members in need.
"Mittens are a simple way to help the homeless in our community during the winter months. We'll be collecting all sizes - men's, women's and children's - and donating them to local programs working with those less fortunate", said Murdoch. "If you forget to bring a pair, mittens will be available to purchase at the door to add to our donation bin."
"Bringing attention to local issues, and those impacted by them, is only the beginning of the conversations we need to be having. We hope hockey fans and community members will be inspired to be part of the change and show their local love for the community we call home and the people who live here," said Murdoch.
United Way Guelph Wellington Dufferin funds a network of more than 70 local programs in Guelph and Wellington and Dufferin counties, to find solutions to issues right here in our local community.
