Windsor Spitfires News Release

The Spitfires returned home from a three-game eastern road trip that saw them go 3-0-0 and they were looking to improve that record Tuesday night versus Sarnia. This was the 6th and final meeting between the two teams this season, Windsor was 4-1-0-0 while Sarnia was 1-1-2-1. Heading into the game, Afanasyev was riding a four-game goal streak while Angle had a five-game assist streak.

In the first period, it was the Spitfires who struck for an all-important first goal. Angle found Purboo backdoor who shot it but was stopped on a great save but D'Amico in front of the net potted the rebound for his 21st of the season. The lead didn't last long, just a minute and fifty-four seconds to be exact. Sarnia tied the game at one just over halfway through the period. But that was all the scoring in the frame. Zito had a fight that rallied the crowd. Shots were in favour of Windsor 10-8 after the first frame.

In the second period, Sarnia found their legs and scored three straight goals to take a 4-1 lead. Late in the period, Douglas gave a beautiful drop pass to Afanasyev who sniped his 26th on the campaign, making it a two-goal game. But just 32 seconds later, Sarnia restored the three-goal lead. Shots were 21-18 after two periods of play.

In the third period with the Spitfires trailing 5-2 late in the period, the Spitfires found the back of the net. Cuylle fired it at the net, and it appeared to hit off a Sarnia skate and into the net, however, the credit for the goal went to Douglas. Again, the Sting responded just 40 seconds later on an empty netter to make it 6-3. With only fifty seconds left in the game, Maggio scored his third of the season but the comeback fell short with Sarnia taking the game by a score of 6-4.

Afanasyev saw his goal streak extended to five games and Angle's assist streak to six.

The Spitfires' next game is Thursday, February 20th when the London Knights come to town; puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
