Union, Crystal Palace Battle to Scoreless Draw in Friendly

CHESTER, Pa. - Philadelphia Union drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace of the English Premier League in front of a paid attendance of 12,881 at Talen Energy Stadium on Wednesday night. Union Academy product Derrick Jones made his First Team debut as a halftime substitute. Jones had signed a short-term agreement with the Union earlier in the day. Philadelphia returns to MLS action when they host New York Red Bulls July 17.

The friendly started off with both clubs getting acclimated with each other. Philadelphia created their best opportunity in the first 30 minutes from MLS All-Star Keegan Rosenberry. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft gathered a loose ball at the edge of the box, but his attempt sailed just over the bar.

The Union were able to gain most of the momentum in the first half thanks to the play of goalkeeper John McCarthy. The La Salle product made game-saving stops against Freddie Ladapo and Sullay Kaikai. Crystal Palace had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 35th minute, but McCarthy snatched the ball before it crossed the goal line. McCarthy finished the evening with three saves in 45 minutes.

The second half saw 10 total substitutions - nine at halftime - for the Union, including the First Team debut of Derrick Jones. Fellow Steel FC player Ryan Richter, on a short-term agreement, saw his first action with the Union in 2016 as a sub in the 77th minute of play. Matt Jones came in for John McCarthy and made two crucial saves in the span of 10 minutes. He finished the evening with three saves to secure the shutout.

The draw with Crystal Palace moved Philadelphia's record to 5-6-1 in international friendly competitions. Philadelphia returns to MLS action this Sunday when they host New York Red Bulls in a nationally televised match. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be on Fox Sports 1.

* Former Academy product and current Bethlehem Steel FC midfielder Derrick Jones made his first team debut tonight. Jones signed with Bethlehem on Dec. 3, 2015 and signed a short-term agreement with the Union on July 13, 2016.

* Fellow Steel FC player Ryan Richter also signed a short-term agreement and came on as a substitute in the 77th minute.
