Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
Camden, NJ - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs lost for the 11th time in 14 contests in the second half as they fell to the Camden Riversharks 10-3 on Thursday afternoon on a special Camp Day at Campbell's Field.
The Riversharks jumped in front in the second inning as back-to-back solo homers by shortstop Danny Richar and first baseman Brian Burgamy gave the Riversharks an early 2-0 lead.
Southern Maryland retaliated in the third as a throwing error from Camden second baseman Juan Francia on a failed double play attempt allowed catcher J.R. Hopf to score from second base and make the score 2-1.
But as was the case for most of the afternoon, whenever the Blue Crabs got a run Camden would come right back. In the bottom of the third, right fielder Ruddy Yan doubled down the right field line, went to third on a fielding error by right fielder Adam Godwin, then scored on the play as a throw from second baseman Bridger Hunt ended up in the stands to give Yan the final base. The Blue Crabs got the run back in the fourth on an RBI single by Jeremy Owens, before a throwing error by Hopf on a stolen base attempt in the bottom of the fifth gave the Riversharks a 4-2 lead.
The Blue Crabs best chance to take the lead came in the seventh. An RBI single by Hunt pulled the Blue Crabs to within one. Southern Maryland had runners at first and second with one out as reliever Jay Marshall entered the game. Marshall got leftfielder Brian Barton to fly out to right field, which allowed for Godwin at second to tag up and race to third. That's when first baseman Ben Harrison stepped up and bounced into a 5-4-3 double play to end the threat and keep the Blue Crabs down at 4-3.
Camden put the game away by scoring five in the seventh. A two-run single by Francia, a RBI single by Yan, a RBI double by third baseman Lloyd Turner, and another RBI single by catcher Alvin Colina gave the Riversharks a commanding 9-3 lead as Southern Maryland used four pitchers to get through the inning.
Camden added another run in the eighth on Yan second RBI single of the game to make the final 10-3. He went 4-5 with a double, two RBI, two runs scored, and two stolen bases. Francia chipped in with a 3-4 effort with two runs scored, two RBI, and two stolen bases while Turner went 2-5 with a double, run, RBI and stolen base.
The Riversharks had five stolen bases in the game.
Southern Maryland got two hits apiece from Godwin, Hopf, and third baseman Joe Jiannetti.
Starter Carlos Vasquez hot the win for Camden after allowing three runs while scattering nine hits. He also walked two and struck out five. Southern Maryland starter Nick Green suffered the loss after allowing five runs, three earned, on six hits in six-plus innings of work.
The Blue Crabs also committed four errors in the ballgame.
Southern Maryland takes on Camden in the finale of their three-game series on Friday at 7:05. The Blue Crabs will send righty Virgil Vasquez (5-5, 5.09 ERA) to the hill against southpaw J.R. Mathes (2-4, 5.96 ERA) for the Riversharks. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
