Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (14-18) lost to the Fort Worth Cats (22-11) by a score of 6-4 in the series opener at the Birdcage on Thursday night.
The Cats got on the board in the fifth when Kris Zacuto doubled with two outs to score Marc Mirizzi and Jordan Foster, giving the Cats a 2-0 lead.
Terence Green and Kip Harkrider both drew walks in the sixth. After a sacrifice bunt moved them to second and third, Green scored on a passed ball for a 3-0 advantage. Jordan Foster reached on an error by Canaries third baseman Chris Hall that allowed Harkrider scored, extending the lead to 4-0. A single by Shawn Williams scored Foster and after five and a half innings the Cats were in front to 5-0. Thanks to the passed ball and the error, all three of the Cats runs in the inning were unearned.
The Canaries got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Anthony Monegan doubled and Ralph Santana singled to put two on for Chad Hermansen. Hermansen hit a three-run homer, his sixteenth blast of the season, bringing the score to 5-3.
The Cats added one more in the eighth. Foster doubled and scored on a single by Williams to make it 6-3.
Hermansen started off the bottom of the eighth with a double off the wall. Abner Arroyo followed up with a single which advanced Hermansen to third. John Schmitz then singled to score Hermansen and make it 6-4. The Canaries would load the bases in the eighth, but Cats closer Steve Wilkerson came into the game and shut the door for his 14th save of the season.
Joel Kirsten (6-3) got the win for Fort Worth. Kirsten pitched 5.1 innings allowing three runs on five hits. Chad Scarbery (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing five runs, two earned, on five hits in six innings for the Canaries.
The Canaries will host the Fort Worth Cats again tomorrow night for the second game in their three-game series at the Birdcage. Tomorrow night the First Premier and Premier Bankcard will present a piggy bank giveaway to the first 500 kids 12 and under.
