Mississippi Braves News Release
Pearl, MS -- --On Turn Back the Clock Night at Trustmark Park, Mississippi and Birmingham faced off in an old fashioned pitcher's duel - until the sixth inning. Scott Diamond had a career day on the mound for the Braves, but got no offensive help as Charlie Shirek had an impressive AA debut in front of 5,320 fans Thursday night.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the sixth when Birmingham plated four runs, three of which were unearned. CJ Lang drew a one-out walk and CJ Retherford reached on an Eric Campbell error to open the floodgates. Former Braves prospect Tyler Flowers ripped a double to right that easily scored Land and Retherford. With two outs in the inning, Dayan Viciedo walked and David Cook doubled both Flowers and Viciedo home to give the Barons a 4-0 lead.
The M-Braves got on the board in the bottom of the eighth when Brandon Hicks doubled and scored on a double by Eric Campbell.
Diamond was outstanding again, but got no run support in suffering his sixth loss of the year. He matched a team-season-high and a career high with eight strikeouts over six innings. He gave up four runs, one earned, on only four hits while fanning eight in the loss. Tim Gustafson came on in relief and fanned three over two scoreless innings. Steve Marek tossed a shutout inning.
Shirek tossed a gem in his AA debut. He gave up three hits through seven scoreless innings to earn the win in his first AA game. Clevelan Santeliz came on and gave up a run in an inning on the hill. Clevelan Santeliz came on and gave up a run in an inning on the hill. Fernando Hernandez threw a scoreless ninth to earn his 11th save of the year.
The M-Braves matched a season high by striking out 12 batters in the game. They were led by Scott Diamond's eight Ks which matched the individual mark for Ks in a game and Diamond's career high set earlier this year.
The Braves and Barons will play game two of this five-game series Friday night at Trustmark Park at 7:05. Mississippi's Ryne Reynoso (3-2, 3.32) will take on Birmingham's Lucas Harrell (7-2, 3.14).
