ZEBULON, NC. (JUNE 11, 2009) - Marshall Hubbard hit two solo homeruns in the game on Thursday night at Five County Stadium and that was enough for the Diamond Jaxx (24-37) to beat the Mudcats (33-27), 2-1. The Diamond Jaxx snap their three game losing skid with the win in the first game of the season against the second place Mudcats.

In the top of the first inning with two outs, Marshall Hubbard took a delivery from Zach Stewart the opposite way to left for his first homer of the game.

The Carolina Mudcats ranked second in batting in the league coming in and they tied the game in the bottom of the first inning. On the first pitch thrown by Jaxx starter Steve Bray, leadoff hitter Sean Henry laced a homer off the scoreboard tying the game at one.

It seemed that the game was off to a slugging pace but both starters settled down and put up zeros. Diamond Jaxx starter, Steve Bray gave the Jaxx six innings on the mound. Bray gave up just the homerun, while scattering four hits. He struck out five and walked one. Zach Stewart went six innings as well for the Cats, giving up just the one run on five base hits. Stewart struck out two and walked one.

Stephen Shell (1-0) made his first appearance with the Jaxx on Thursday night. Shell went three innings, in extended relief. Shell gave up two hits and struck out four while walking three. Shell escaped a jam in the bottom of the eighth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Shell picked up a strikeout of Zach Cozart then a line out to Logan Parker to end the inning. Greg Halman made a game saving catch on the ball hit by Parker.

In the top of the ninth inning, Marshall Hubbard led off with a solo homer to right and giving the Jaxx a 2-1 lead. Hubbard, playing just miles away from the place he played college ball at Chapel Hill went 3-for-4 with two homers and a double.

Shell dealt a scoreless bottom of the ninth and the Jaxx snap the three game losing streak. Ruben Medina (1-3) takes the loss for the Mudcats, giving up the homer in the ninth to Hubbard.

The Diamond Jaxx and Mudcats go at it again on Friday night at Five County Stadium in Zebulan. RHP Kyle Parker (3-2, 3.57) goes for the Jaxx at 6:15 CDT. He will be opposed by LHP Travis Wood (5-3, 1.22) for the Carolina Mudcats.
