Spokane Chiefs News Release

The Austrian Ice Hockey Federation has named Spokane Chiefs defenseman Stefan Ulmer to their preliminary roster for World Junior Hockey Championships. Ulmer will remain with the Chiefs until December 18th, their final game before the Holiday break, and then join Team Austria for the tournament that will begin in Saskatoon and Regina on December 26th. Ulmer will rejoin the Chiefs after the tournament is over.

Ulmer was named the Best Defenseman of the 2009 IIHF Group B World Junior Hockey Championships after leading Austria to the gold medal. Austria earned a berth in this year's A pool by virtue of last year's tournament win. Ulmer also led the tournament in scoring with five goals and 11 points.

The 19-year-old is the Chiefs leading scorer from the blueline this year with four goals and 13 assists. All of his goals and nine of his helpers have come on the power play. In total, Ulmer has played 125 career games in Spokane including 63 last year when he scored eight goals and 40 points.

The last time Austria participated in the A-pool was 2004.

Ulmer is the third Chief that has the chance to represent their country at the tournament. Jared Cowen has been invited to Canada's selection camp and Tyler Johnson has been named to USA Hockey's preliminary roster. Canada's final roster will be named on December 17th and the USA roster will be completed on December 23rd.
