Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Tulsa Drillers got another dominating pitching effort out of Enmanuel Ulloa, as Tulsa knocked off the Springfield Cardinals by a final score of 5-2 on Wednesday night at Hammons Field.

Ulloa (6-3) went seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits, while tying a season-high by striking out nine men on the night. Ulloa improved to 2-0 against the Cards this year, allowing just 2 runs in over 20 innings against Springfield in 2005.

The Drillers took the lead early, getting a run against Cards All-Star Randy Leek in the first inning. Sean Barker's RBI double chased home Tony Miller for a 1-0 lead.

The game remained 1-0 until the fourth, when the Drillers broke it open by scoring four times, taking a 5-0 lead. With two outs, Tino Sanchez blooped what seemed like a harmless pop fly into shallow center field. No Cardinal defenders could make the play however, as Jayson Nix scored from second base, while Sanchez ended up at second with what was ruled an RBI double. Jordan Czarniecki followed with an RBI single, scoring Sanchez to make it 3-0. Pitcher Enmanuel Ulloa capped the inning by picking up his first base hit of the year, a two-run homer to left-center field off of Randy Leek.

Leek (13-7) went just five innings on the night, allowing five earned runs on eight hits, ending a personal three-game winning streak.

The Cardinals had few scoring opportunities until the eighth inning, failing to bring runners home from third base with less than two outs on three different occasions.

Aaron Herr's two-out two-run single in the eighth against Tulsa's Judd Songster put the Cards on the board at 5-2, as Papo Bolivar and Shaun Boyd both scored. But after a walk to Travis Hanson loaded the bases, Gabe Johnson struck out looking to end the threat.

In the ninth, Tulsa's Jim Miller issued a two-out walk to Brendan Ryan, but struck out Bolivar to end it, giving Miller his sixth save.

The Cards are now 26-32 in the second half, 5.5 games behind Arkansas in the East Division. Springfield looks to get back on track on Thursday night, sending Chris Lambert (2-6) to the mound against Tulsa's Zach Parker (10-9). Game time on Thursday night at Hammons Field is 7:10pm and gates open at 6:10pm. Plenty of tickets are available by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com.
