Hooks Update

August 24, 2005 - Texas League (TL1)
Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

BLAME IT ON THE RAIN - Not that Milli Vanilli could have helped last night. It's doubtful that anything could have helped last night's situation in Frisco, which resulted in the Hooks and RoughRiders dueling to a 2-2 tie in a game that was called because of a torrential thunderstorm. The Hooks had runners at second and third with two men out in the top of the 10th inning when the players were called off the field.

Quicker action by the umpiring crew may have saved the infield for a continuation of play later in the evening, but that's a weightier issue for discussion by league officials in the future. For now, the game itself counts as a rare "tie" game, giving the Hooks an official second-half record of 30 wins, 27 losses and 1 tie. The Hooks and RoughRiders will play a double-header to make up for the tie result. That twin bill gets under way this afternoon at 5:00 pm at the Dr. Pepper/Seven-Up Ballpark, where temperatures as of 2:00 pm today were already at the century mark.

ROCKHOUNDS, MISSIONS IN SIGHT - The Hooks still have 13 games remaining to play in the half. As of today, Corpus Christi trails Midland by 2½ games and San Antonio by just a half-game. The final nine games of the regular season will be played against those two clubs at Whataburger Field.

DRIVE FOR 5 - The ‘Drive for 5' is on, and given the Hooks' chase for a second-half pennant, it's very possible that attendance during this upcoming final home stand could push the season total past the 500,000 mark. In order to reach that number, the Hooks would have to average 7,394 fans per game from August 27th through September 4th. The current average per night stands at 7,105 fans a game. Reserve your seats now to be a part of this final push for the playoffs and what could be an historic achievement of 500,000+ in attendance during this inaugural 2005 campaign! HIRSH TEXAS LEAGUE PITCHER OF THE YEAR! - This is so hot it's smokin'! The Texas League just released (2:00 pm today) its 2005 Post-Season All Star Team, and Hooks' ace Jason Hirsh was not only named as one of the six best pitchers of the year in the league, but he was also chosen as the 2005 Texas League Pitcher of the Year. Congratulations to Jason, who after his seven-inning performance last night has a record of 12-8 with a 3.11 ERA. He is by far the circuit's strikeout leader with 153 K's in 159.1 innings. Also on the squad as one of the six pitchers is former Hooks' starter Fernando Nieve, now with AAA Round Rock. We'll have more on this news in a release that will come out following today's double-header.

THERE'S A NEW KID IN TOWN - Slated to join the club sometime today in Frisco is right-handed pitcher Josh Miller, who had been pitching for the Bridgeport Bluefish in the independent Atlantic League. In 20 starts this season for Bridgeport, Miller was 7-6 with a 3.88 ERA. He had yet to arrive in Frisco this afternoon, and his activation is pending his passing a physical examination. While that may be completed before game time today, Hooks' manager Dave Clark says it's doubtful Miller will see any action in the twin bill. When Miller is activated, the Hooks will have a full complement of 24 active players on their roster.

SPURS' TROPHIES COMING TO CC - That's right, the three NBA championship trophies won by the San Antonio Spurs in 1999, 2003 and 2005 will be on display at Whataburger Field during next Wednesday's home game against the San Antonio Missions. You don't have to sweat an 82-game schedule and a grueling playoff run, or guard Rip Hamilton to have your picture taken with the trophy. You just have to come out to next Wednesday's game! Thanks to the good folks at Whataburger for pulling some strings to get the trophies down to Corpus Christi. HOOKS TRIVIA - Where did Hooks' skipper Dave Clark attend college? Reply to info@cchooks.com with your answers. A winner will be selected at random from the correct entries received, and that individual will get a Nolan Ryan Bobblehead doll. Good luck! The answer to last week's question was Chris Sampson.
