U.S. National Team News Release
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Jeremy Morin (Auburn, N.Y.) netted his team-leading 19th goal of the season, but the U.S. National Under-17 Team was defeated, 3-1, by Marquette in North American Hockey League action Saturday night at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.
"I was happy with our effort, but we couldn't get the extra goals we needed to win," said Ron Rolston, head coach of the U.S. National Under-17 Team. "We had plenty of scoring opportunities, and we can build on that for tomorrow's game."
Marquette scored the game's first goal at the 8:20 mark of the opening period as Aaron Pietila beat Team USA goaltender Michael Clemente (Great Falls, Va.) with a wrist shot up high on the glove side from the bottom of the left circle.
Team USA knotted the score at, 1-1, when Morin scored at 9:39 of the second stanza off assists from Chris Brown (Flower Mound, Texas) and David Valek (Orem, Utah). Brown started a 2-on-1 rush in the neutral zone with a pin-point pass to Morin on the left wing. Morin then released a slapshot from the left circle that whistled past Marquette goaltender Matt Brooker on the glove side.
The Rangers regained the lead with a power-play goal just 1:18 into the third period. Nic Weight put a wrist shot from the slot by Clemente on the glove side. Josh Bussell netted an even-strength marker at the 10:39 mark of the final session to help Marquette open up a 3-1 lead it would not relinquish.
Clemente finished with 27 saves for Team USA, and saw his record fall to 2-2-0 on the season. Brooker made 25 saves and improved to 9-2-0.
The U.S. National Under-17 Team (10-12-0) concludes its marathon week by hosting the Alpena IceDiggers tomorrow afternoon at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. Opening faceoff is set for 3 p.m. ET.
