U.S.A. routs Ukraine at World Championships

Team U.S.A. completed its Preliminary Round action with a 7-1 rout of the Ukraine on Wednesday at the International Ice Hockey Federation's 2004 World Championships. The U.S., coached by former Providence Bruins defenseman and head coach Peter Laviolette, finished the Preliminary Round with a 1-1-1 record in Group B. With three points, the Stars and Stripes are now tied for second place in Group B with Slovakia, which plays Finland later today. The World Championships is being played from April 24 through May 9 in Prague and Ostrava, Czech Republic. A total of 11 former P-Bruins are playing in the tournament, for the U.S., Canada, Finland, Slovakia and Latvia.

Ryan Malone, Mike Grier, Paul Mara, Richard Park and Keith Ballard scored for the U.S., while Blake Sloan added two goals. Chris Drury, Dustin Brown and Erik Westrum each had two assists. Mike Dunham stopped 16 shots for his first win of the tournament. Former P-Bruins Andy Hilbert, Hal Gill and Jeff Jillson all played, but were held off the scoreboard.

Team U.S.A. will have to wait for the outcome of the Finland-Slovakia game to find out who they will face first in the Qualifying Round. A win by Finland will clinch second place in Group B for the U.S. A win by Slovakia would move the U.S. to third place. Team U.S.A. will move to Group F for the Qualifying Round, along with Finland and Slovakia, as well as Sweden, Russia and Denmark.

The Qualifying and Relegation Rounds of the World Championships run from April 30 – May 4. The Final Round will be played from May 5 – May 9.
