Winston-Salem Dash News Release
LYNCHBURG, VA (JULY 14, 2011) - Andy Wilkins' two out double brought home the go-ahead runs in the seventh inning as Winston-Salem scored five of six runs with two outs and took a 6-3 win over Lynchburg on Thursday night at City Stadium. Ian Gac belted his 23rd home run of the season and 150th of his professional career in the third, marking his third consecutive ballgame with a long ball.
Sloppy fielding led to the first Lynchburg run of the game in the first inning. Lead-off hitter Andrelton Simmons reached on a fielding error by second baseman Luis Sierra. Simmons was then caught stealing, but Tyler Saladino muffed the throw and Simmons advanced to third. After Dash starter Matt Wickswat retired the next two batters, Adam Milligan doubled in Simmons to put the Hillcats up 1-0.
Winston (10-10, 42-48) responded imminently when Kyle Colligan hit his fifth home run of the season in the second. The home run hit off the scoreboard beyond the left field fence.
Ian Gac struck again in the third against Hillcats starter David Hale. Andy Wilkins walked with two outs, and Gac hammered a pitch to center that left the yard and put the Dash up 3-1. The 23rd overall homer for Gac was his third in as many ballgames, and 13th on the season that either tied the ballgame or gave Winston the lead. It was also Gac's 150th in his professional career.
The Hillcats (6-14, 36-54) chipped away in the fourth. Joey Terdoslavich doubled to start the frame and scored on a single by Marcus Lemon. In the fifth, Barrett Kleinknecht hit a lead-off homer against Wickswat to tie the game at three.
Hale and reliever Dimasther Delgado combined to retire nine straight Dash hitters from the end of the fourth until there were two outs in the seventh. Saladino doubled against Delgado with two down before Jared Mitchell walked. Wilkins came up and lined a bases-clearing double into right-center to put Winston up 5-3. Gac followed and hit a popup single into right field that scored Wilkins.
Leroy Hunt relieved Wickswat in the bottom of the seventh and threw two scoreless, hitless innings and bridged the game into the ninth when Taylor Thompson came in to close the ballgame. Thompson worked a scoreless ninth to pick up his ninth save of the season. Wickswat (2-1) got his second straight win after six innings where he gave up three runs (two earned) and struck out three. Delgado (5-6) was hit with the loss.
Winston-Salem and Lynchburg continue their four-game series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. at City Stadium. RHP Cameron Bayne (7-4, 3.58) makes his return to the Winston-Salem rotation to start for the Dash against RHP Zeke Spruill (7-7, 3.17).
