Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
LHP Drake Britton (1-7, 7.26) at RHP Wilfredo Boscan (2-6, 4.81)
HOME SWEET HOME: The Pelicans are finally back in Myrtle Beach after a 3-7 ten-game trek that took them up to Lynchburg, down to Winston-Salem and all the way back up to Wilmington. They're happy to be back on the Grand Strand as last night's 8-3 victory improved their league-leading home record to 27-12 (.692). Their mark at BB&T Coastal Field is more than 100 percentage points better than 24-17 Wilmington (.585), who holds the second-best home record in the loop. Last night began a stretch in which the Pelicans will be playing 21 out of 27 games at home.
BOLD STROKES: Jared Bolden cracked a two-run home run in the ninth-inning in Wilmington on Sunday and in his next trip to the plate, in the first frame last night against the Red Sox, he did it again. The booming shot to right-center was hit to one of the deepest parts of BB&T Coastal Field and gave the Birds the lead for good. The Lynchburg native wasn't done as he added an RBI double in the next inning and a single in the fifth for his second three-hit game of the season. Bolden also had three knocks on April 28 at home against Potomac. Over his past nine games, the lefty is 13-for-30 (.433) with two homers, four doubles, eight RBIs and six runs scored.
UNO, DOS, TRES, CATORCE!: While the offense as a whole has struggled of late prior to last night's 14-hit outburst, Zach Zaneski has been on fire. With two more hits in last night's win, he extended his hitting streak to 14 consecutive games. The run began when he went 2-for-10 while catching all 23 innings in a June 12 marathon in Kinston. The former Rhode Island Ram's streak is tied for the third longest in the Carolina League this season, the injured Peter Hissey of Salem and Winston-Salem's Ian Gac have also run up 14-gamers. "Z" is batting .313 (20-64) during this stretch and has raised his average to .303 and is only 40 plate appearances shy of qualifying.
STRUGGLING HURLERS: Tonight's starting pitchers look to turn things around and get back in the win column. Wilfredo Boscan of the Pelicans and Salem's Drake Britton have combined for a 3-13 record and hold two of the seven highest loss totals in the league. Boscan has not won in nearly a month after tossing seven brilliant innings against Frederick on June 16. Britton's only win of 2011 came on May 7 at home against the Pelicans.
