Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
Binghamton hitters plated all six of their runs with two outs despite striking out 15 times in the B-Mets 6-2 triumph over Akron Saturday afternoon at Canal Park. Josh Satin drove in three of the six runs with a 2-5 performance and Brad Holt pitched worthy of a win with five, shutout innings in his 2011 debut.
For the third straight game, Binghamton (2-1) took the early lead. In the third inning, Aeros' starter Scott Barnes walked Jean Luc Blaquiere to open the inning. Jose Coronado moved the runner to second with a sacrifice. After Lorenzo Scott struck out, Jordany Valdespin pulled a double inside the first-base bag to plate Blaquiere with the game's first run. Barnes walked Malo next setting the table for Satin, who lined a single to left to score Valdespin, making it 2-0.
Meanwhile, Holt impressed with five, strong innings. The right-hander allowed just three hits and a pair of walks while striking out three and was in line for the win when the bullpen suffered a hiccup.
Ricky Brooks, who had tossed a scoreless sixth, got the first out in the seventh before Karexon Sanchez walked and Donnie Webb singled knocking Brooks from the game. Roy Merritt was summoned to face left-handed hitting Grady Sizemore, but gave up an infield single to him following a wild pitch, allowing one run to score. Jordan Henry tied the game with a single of his own. Merritt struck out the next hitter, Juan Diaz, but left with two men in scoring position and two outs in favor of Erik Turgeon. Turgeon secured the tie game by inducing a comebacker to the mound from cleanup man Matt McBride.
The B-Mets rallied to take the lead for good in the eighth. Akron (1-2) reliever Chen-Chang Lee issued a leadoff walk to Valdespin. After the next two hitters struck out, Valdespin stole second to move into scoring position. From there, Eric Campbell drove him in with a single to left, vaulting Binghamton into the lead 3-2. Campbell took second on the throw to the plate. Brahiam Maldonado increased the lead to two with a bloop RBI single.
Satin drove home two more with a two-run single in the ninth off Lee to provide the final margin. Lee was hung with the loss. He allowed four runs - two earned - over 1 2/3 innings.
Dylan Owen atoned for the loss on Friday with a scoreless ninth, making a winner out of Turgeon.
Binghamton will aim for the series win in the finale Sunday afternoon at 1:05 PM when LHP Robert Carson (0-0) goes up against RHP Austin Adams (0-0) of Akron. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 12:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
