San Jose Giants News Release

The San Jose Giants scored seven of their eight runs on two-out hits in an 8-4 victory over the Bakersfield Blaze on Tuesday evening at Sam Lynn Ballpark. Every San Jose starter finished the contest with at least one hit as the Giants (66-62) claimed the opener of a pivotal three-game series.

Dylan Davis (3-for-5, HR, RBI) homered as part of a three-hit night while Miguel Gomez (1-for-5, HR, 2 RBI) smacked a key go-ahead two-run home run in the top of the seventh to lead the offensive charge. Daniel Carbonell (2-for-3, HR, 2 RBI) also went deep for San Jose. The Giants scored six unanswered runs over the final four innings to finish the game en route to the win.

Bakersfield's Chantz Mack connected for a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to give the Blaze a 4-2 lead, but San Jose rallied. In the sixth, Aramis Garcia walked with two outs before Mitch Delfino singled. T.J. Bennett then stepped to the plate and laced a double down the right field line to plate Garcia. The hit brought the Giants back to within 4-3. Carbonell followed by drawing a walk to load the bases, but Bakersfield reliever Eddie Campbell prevented further damage in the inning when he induced Ronnie Jebavy to pop out to first for the third out.

San Jose though kept the pressure on with another clutch two-out hit in the top of the seventh. Facing reliever Vinny Nittoli, Rando Moreno was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Nittoli recovered to set down the next two hitters, but Gomez then stepped to the plate and launched a 3-1 pitch over the fence in right for a two-run home run. The round-tripper, Gomez's seventh with the Giants, gave San Jose a 5-4 advantage.

The Giants extended their lead in the top of the eighth when Carbonell blasted a two-out, solo home run to left center. Then in the ninth, San Jose scored two more runs to make it 8-4. Moreno drew a leadoff walk before Davis singled. A wild pitch then advanced the runners to second and third. The following two batters were retired, but Garcia then belted a two-out double off the fence down the left field line to score both Moreno and Davis for a four-run cushion.

Dusten Knight (3-1) earned the win out of the Giants bullpen after tossing 2 2/3 innings with just one run and one hit allowed. Knight entered the game with the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth and promptly allowed the go-ahead home run to Mack. Knight though settled down and retired the next eight batters he faced, including 1-2-3 sixth and seventh innings, to finish his outing. The right-hander struck out three and did not issue a walk.

Pat Young (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) pitched the bottom of the eighth and worked around a two-out single to keep the Giants ahead. Reyes Moronta (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO) then struck out the side in a perfect ninth inning to seal the victory.

Nittoli (3-5) was saddled with the loss after yielding three runs (all earned) on three hits over two innings of relief work.

San Jose initially enjoyed a 2-0 lead with single tallies in the second and third innings. In the top of the second, Carbonell delivered a two-out RBI single to bring home the first run of the night. An inning later, Davis hammered a solo home run to left center for a 2-0 advantage.

San Francisco Giants pitcher Chris Heston started on the mound as part of a rehabilitation assignment. Heston pitched 4 1/3 innings and surrendered three runs (all earned) on five hits. He walked three and struck out one during his 74-pitch outing.

Heston began his start with two scoreless frames before running into trouble in the bottom of the third. Back-to-back two-out singles from Mack and Jay Baum put runners on first and second. Heston then uncorked two wild pitches during an at-bat to Kyle Petty allowing Mack to score. Moments later, Petty singled up the middle to plate Baum tying the game.

Heston bounced back with a 1-2-3 bottom of the fourth before recording a quick first out in the fifth. Heston then issued a one-out walk to Gianfranco Wawoe and was removed from the game after reaching his pitch limit. Knight entered from the bullpen and immediately surrendered the go-ahead home run to Mack before settling down.

Bennett (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) and Delfino (2-for-4) also finished with multi-hit games for the Giants.
