Two Home Runs Not Enough as Champions Drop Series Finale 5-2 to Aigles

OTTAWA - Malik Collymore and Jiandido Tromp each hit solo home runs but the Ottawa Champions couldn't find any more offense as they lost 5-2 to the Trois-Rivières Aigles on Sunday.

Champions starter Zac Westcott pitched seven innings, striking out seven and walking one, with two earned runs on five hits. "I felt good," said Westcott about his outing. "The changeup was working really well, I had good fastball command and didn't have to throw the curveball too much unless they were kind of on my fastball."

Even though the Champions couldn't get the bats going, Westcott was quick to point out the effort level he received from his defense.

"Defense-wise, I can't ask for more," said Westcott. "I got guys jumping into the wall for me, there was a popup that lands in our dugout where Larry (Balkwill) and (Michael) Baca are sliding into the fence. I can't say enough how much these guys do for me every fifth day so I gotta get better at coming in and shutting the door right there and getting us on offense."

Champions manager Sébastien Boucher was happy with his starter's performance.

"He did great," said Boucher. "He kept guys off-balance. He got a little unlucky in the first inning, gave up two runs there, but other than that he's been doing what he's been doing since he got here. He's always giving us a chance to win a ball game and we seem to never be able to get it for him."

Jiandido Tromp continued his hot streak at the plate, hitting a solo shot over the center-field wall in the fourth to tie the game 2-2. Tromp went 3-for-3 with a double and a walk on Saturday and has gotten at least one hit in six of his last seven games.

The Aigles took an early lead, putting up two runs in the first, but Collymore's third home run of the year cut the lead in half. Boucher was not overly impressed with the team's effort over this series and the six-game homestand that just wrapped up.

"That's not what we need to be doing right now," said Boucher. "We can't be coming up short. Yes, today Mazza did what he's been doing this season since he came back from the DL. He's been keeping guys off balance, we were able to get him for two but we weren't able to get more. You get five hits, two runs, it's tough to win ball games against a guy like that."

Boucher said that the team will be making some roster changes over the next couple of days to try to "bring in a little bit more energy."
