Two Former Sharks Stick in CFL

June 27, 2012 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Jacksonville Sharks News Release

JACKSONVILLE - The ArenaBowl XXIV Champion Jacksonville Sharks announced Wednesday that two players who competed for the team early in the 2012 Arena Football League season have made the opening-week rosters of their respective teams in the Canadian Football League. Defensive lineman Derrick Summers and offensive lineman Michael Ola will compete for the Toronto Argonauts and Montreal Alouettes, respectively.

The 24-year-old Summers played in six games for the Sharks in 2012 before joining the Argonauts on May 14. Summers registered 10.5 total tackles (eight solo) and two sacks with Jacksonville this season, also registering a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Summers then racked up a pair of sacks in the Argonauts' pre-season opener against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on June 14.

The former Toledo Rocket burst on to the scene during the 2011 AFL season, when he led the Sharks with 11 sacks, 12 tackles for loss and six forced fumbles. Summers is a native of Southfield, Michigan.

The 24-year-old Ola was a mainstay along the Jacksonville offensive line as a rookie, starting each of the team's first 11 games this season before signing with the Alouettes on June 10. A native of Riverdale, Georgia who played collegiately at Hampton, Ola is currently listed as the backup right tackle on the Alouettes' depth chart.

Summers' and Ola's ascendance to the CFL strengthens Jacksonville Head Coach Les Moss' track record of developing talent to compete in other professional leagues. Recently, wide receiver Jamarko Simmons spent a significant portion of the 2011 National Football League season with the New York Jets' practice squad following the conclusion of the Sharks' championship run.
