SAN JOSE, Calif. - The SaberCats announced today that they have been assigned defensive back Mervin Brookins. He returns to San Jose, having spent the 2011 season with the SaberCats.

"Mervin is a quick, athletic defender," said Owner/Head Coach Darren Arbet. "He gives us some versatility and we look forward to bringing him in right away to help our secondary."

Brookins (5-11, 190, Sacramento City College) appeared in and started 12 games last year for the SaberCats before being injured on June 4 at Dallas. He was a versatile and multi-position threat in 2011, spending time at defensive back and wide receiver, while also returning kicks. Brookins led the team in all-purpose yards with 1,319, recorded 49.5 tackles with three interceptions, caught 36 passes for 418 receiving yards and returned 43 kicks for 788 yards.

In his three AFL seasons he has compiled career totals of 66 tackles, three interceptions, 418 receiving yards and 1,180 total kick return yards. Prior to his professional career the Sacramento native attended Kansas-based Bethel College and Sacramento City College.
