Maurice Williams Earns AFL Weekly Honors
June 27, 2012 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Cleveland Gladiators News Release
CLEVELAND - Gladiators wide receiver and kick returner Maurice Williams has been awarded the Spalding Highlight of the Week for his performance in Week 16 versus the Jacksonville Sharks. Williams becomes the fourth Gladiators player to be recognized for on-field performance in 2012.
Williams, in his first season in the AFL, has seen action on offense, defense and special teams thus far. A natural receiver, he has assisted on kick returns, as well as action at the jack linebacker position.
Versus Jacksonville, Williams provided a spark on special teams, with a 53-yard kick return for a touchdown in the first quarter. It marked the first kick return score of the season for the Gladiators, and the first since June 11, 2011 when Quorey Payne did so versus the Georgia Force.
"Mo has the athletic ability to play multiple positions, and it has paid off for us," Gladiators head coach Steve Thonn said. "Because of our receiving corps, his offensive touches have been limited. It's nice to see him be able make his impact in other areas. He really deserves this honor."
In Week 15 versus the New Orleans VooDoo, Williams intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown while playing in the linebacker position.
