Iowa Barnstormers News Release
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The Arkansas Twisters spoiled Coach John Gregory's return to Little Rock as the host Twisters outlasted Gregory's visiting Iowa Barnstormers, 55-46, at Alltel Arena.
The Twisters' sixth straight win takes them to 9-4 on the season, while the non-conference loss drops the Barnstormers to 4-9.
Despite an efficient game from their offense, the 'Stormers defense could not contain the red hot Twisters' offense and QB Kyle Rowley. Rowley threw for an eye-popping 368 yards and eight touchdowns. His favorite target on the night was Chris Denney, who hauled in five touchdowns, while Jamaal Perry added two scoring receptions.
The visiting 'Stormers drew first blood as they marched the game's opening kickoff down the field before QB Joe Brannen scored on a one yard keeper. The Twisters answered quickly as Rowley found Perry in the back of the end zone for the first of his four first half touchdown passes. A 41 yard field goal off the toe of the Barnstormers Jeff Glas ended the first quarter scoring with Iowa leading 10-7.
A high-scoring second quarter was led by the Twisters' Rowley and Denney. Denney hauled in three scoring passes, while the 'Stormers could only muster a six-yard scoring strike from Brannen to former Twister standout Robert Kilow. The 'Stormers avoided further damage with a four-play goal line stand in the final ten seconds of the half, holding Arkansas to a 28-17 lead as the first half expired.
The 'Stormers and Twisters traded two scores in the third quarter as Brannen ran for one and hit a streaking Tim Dodge for another, while the Twisters struck twice through the air brining the third quarter to a close maintaining an eleven point edge, 42-31.
Despite two fourth quarter touchdowns on another Brannen-to-Dodge connection and a two-yard Terrance Freeney run, the 'Stormers just couldn't close the gap as a final rally in the last minute fell short and time expired with a 55-46 Arkansas victory.
The Barnstormers now have a bye week over the July 4 holiday weekend and return to the friendly confines of Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Field Saturday, July 12 for a rematch with Midwest Division rival Quad City Steamwheelers.
