Turner stars in Barnstormers' win
September 7, 2009 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
It had been more than three weeks since Lloyd Turner had had more than one hit in a game. He spent Labor Day making up for lost time.
The Lancaster left fielder went 4-for-4 with two walks and scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th as the Barnstormers pulled out a 6-5 decision over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs in front of 3,217 at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Turner opened the bottom of the 10th against Matthew Righter (0-1) with a bouncing single past the outstretched glove of second baseman Mike Just. Jason Cooper moved him to second with a bunt, and Turner advanced to third on a ground out by Michael Woods. The Blue Crabs opted to walk L.J. Biernbaum to bring Aaron Herr to the plate. Biernbaum advanced to second on defensive indifference, taking away a force play. Herr followed with a grounder to third which was mishandled by Patrick Osborn, allowing Turner to cross with the winning tally.
Osborn had tied the game with a leadoff homer onto the hillside in left field in the eighth inning.
It was also Osborn who gave Southern Maryland an early lead with an RBI double in the top of the first inning that plated Rich Giannotti.
Lancaster answered with a pair in the lower half of the inning. Turner led off with a home run into the picnic deck, his 10th long ball of the season. Woods walked, and Biernbaum singled with one out. Southern Maryland caught Woods off second base, retiring him in a rundown. Biernbaum moved up on the fielder's choice and scored when Herr rapped a single into left field for the 2-1 lead.
The Blue Crabs tied the game in the second on an unearned run driven home on Chuck Jeroloman's sacrifice fly. Lancaster again came back on a walk to Jed Morris and singles by Cesar Suarez and Turner, giving the host club a 3-2 lead.
That one-run lead held until the fifth when John Ramistella crushed a home run down the left field line. Southern Maryland retook the lead in the seventh. Just led off with a double to right center and took third when Biernbaum had difficulty picking the ball off the base of the fence. Reliever Reymond Cruz balked him home for the 4-3 edge.
Again, Southern Maryland gave the lead right back. Woods led off the home seventh with a single into left against Mike James and scooted to second on a wild pitch. Biernbaum tied the game with a double belted into the left center field alley. He later scored the go-ahead run on Morris' two-out single into right.
Ricardo Gomez (5-2) retired the final two batters in the top of the 10th inning to record the win.
Lancaster hosts Southern Maryland again on Tuesday evening, a night to honor America's heroes. Special game-worn patriotic jerseys will be auctioned off during Tuesday night's game. Trey Hodges (4-4) will start for Lancaster against lefty Keith Ramsey (5-3). Game time is 7:00.
