Long Island Ducks News Release
Central Islip, N.Y., September 7, 2009)- The Newark Bears defeated the Long Island Ducks 14-6 on Monday night before a past-capacity crowd of 6,506 at Citibank Park.
Long Island cracked the scoreboard first with a single run in the home half of the second frame. Johnny Hernandez led off the inning with a double into left field, advanced to third base on a wild pitch, and scored on an Estee Harris sacrifice fly.
In the third, Newark opened up the contest with an eight-spot off Ducks' starter Julio Manon. Seven hits, including Salomon Manriquez' three-run triple into left-center field highlighted the frame. Two more runs in the top of the fourth inning off Robert Paulk extended the Bears' lead to 10-1.
After Newark plated a run in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Carl Everett, the Flock answered with four runs in the next half an inning. A Matt Cavagnaro two-run homer, followed by a RBI triple by George Lombard and RBI single off the bat of Freddie Thon helped Long Island cut the deficit to 11-5. Cavagnaro would plate another run as his RBI groundout in the sixth pushed the score to 11-6.
The Bears would tack on three more runs in the last three innings against the Ducks' bullpen to help seal the game. Bears' reliever Scott Rice (2-1) earned the win firing two and two-thirds innings, yielding no earned runs, with two punch-outs. Manon (7-6) was hit with the loss allowing eight runs over two and two-thirds frames.
Ray Navarrete and Lombard each had two hits apiece in the defeat.
