Pink In The Rink: The Oilers are doing their part to take a stand against cancer with the sixth annual Pink In The Rink Night on Saturday, February 8 at 7:35 p.m. against the Wichita Thunder. The game is presented by TD Williamson and will raise money for Turn Tulsa Pink which provides support for cancer charities across the Tulsa area. The Oilers players will wear special, limited edition pink jerseys which will be auctioned off at the ONEOK Club immediately following the game. Turn Tulsa Pink will receive a portion of the ticket proceeds and the Oilers are encouraging all fans to wear pink as a show of support for cancer patients and their families.
Week In Review: The Oilers went 1-1-0 last week with a loss on Friday night in Quad City and a victory at home on Saturday over the Denver Cutthroats. In the contest with the Mallards, Tulsa suffered a 2-1 setback after carrying a 1-0 lead into the third period. Brad Fogal made 36 stops for the Oilers who dropped their sixth straight game. The Oilers finally snapped their skid on Saturday thanks to another 36-save performance out of Fogal. Rookie forward Blair Macaualy tallied twice for Tulsa in the first period and the Oilers, despite tying a season low with only 20 shots on net, cruised past the Cutthroats for a 4-1 win. The Oilers beat the Fish for the first time in five meetings this season and claimed two points on home ice for the first time in three weeks.
Bubble Boys: With 43 points on the season, Tulsa remains tied with Arizona for eighth place in the CHL standings and one point ahead of the ninth place Wichita Thunder. The Oilers will play four straight games against the Sundogs in mid-February and will face off against the Thunder seven times before the end of the regular season. Tulsa is still tops in the CHL in total offense with 151 goals scored but has the second lowest win percentage (.500) in the league.
New Face: On Saturday, just before their game against Denver, the Oilers signed forward Matt Amrbroz. A 6-foot-4, 210-pound winger, Ambroz, waived by the Cutthroats on Friday, is a third-year pro from Minnesota who recorded three points (1 goal, 2 assists) in 11 games with Denver. As a rookie in 2011-12, Ambroz appeared in 48 games for the Alaska Aces (ECHL) and spent the majority of the 2012-13 campaign with the Stockton Thunder (ECHL). Prior to turning pro, the 26-year old played four seasons of college hockey at the University of Nebraska-Omaha.
Phenomenal Fogal: Third-year goaltender Brad Fogal showed flashes of brilliance throughout Tulsa's last two games and finished the weekend with 72 saves on the 75 shots he faced for an impressive .960 save percentage. The Ontario native turned in back-to-back 36-save outings against the Mallards and the Cutthroats and earned his first win as an Oiler on Saturday night in the 4-1 triumph over Denver.
Cescon Dishes Out Justice: Oilers heavyweight Craig Cescon dropped the gloves with Cuttrhoats' enforcer Daniel Amesbury on Saturday night and what transpired was one of the best bouts in the CHL this season. Amesbury, who appeared in 31 games for the Oilers last season, went after Tulsa forward Blair Macaulay in the second period and Cescon immediately came to his teammates' defense. Both combatants threw continuous punches for nearly 30 seconds as the BOK Center crowd roared its approval. Click here to watch the fight.
Cutthroats Curse Lifted: In the first four meetings of the season against Denver, the Oilers were only able to score a total of five goals and never scored more than two goals in a single game. Last Saturday was a different story as the Oilers scored three times on nine first period shots and reached the four-goal plateau for the first time in six games. Cutthroats forward Garrett Bembridge, the CHL's leading scorer, was held without a point and the Oilers held the league's number one power play unit to an 0-for-5 performance.
"Kach" Him If You Can: Oilers rookie Adam Pleskach is riding a four-game goal streak and continues to lead all CHL rookies with 26 goals. The 25-year old winger is tied for the team lead with seven power play goals and has recorded 41 points (26 goals, 15 assists) in 40 games this season.
Twice As Nice: Two goals in the first period of Saturday's win over Denver gave rookie forward Blair Macaulay his first multi-goal game as a professional. Eight minutes into the opening frame, Macaulay walked off the boards and snapped the puck over the blocker of Cutthroats' goalie Kent Patterson and with four minutes left in the period, Macaulay chipped a pass from Michel Beausoleil over the glove hand of Patterson. The Winnipeg native is tied for third among all CHL rookies with 27 points (9 goals, 18 assists).
Oil Drops: With his 25th goal of the season on Saturday, Michel Beausoleil matched his highest goal output as an Oiler. Beausoleil scored 25 goals in 61 games with Tulsa during the 2010-11 season and his career-high is 45 goals with the Oklahoma City Blazers in 2004-05...Ryan Menei is only one point shy of 400 for his career...Forward Todd Robinson remains on the 7-day IR...Defenseman Jake Obermeyer was placed on the 14-day IR.
