Frisco RoughRiders News Release
FRISCO, Texas - The Frisco RoughRiders were downed by the Tulsa Drillers 14-2 on Friday night from Riders Field. Frisco was handed their largest loss since July 16th, a 14-2 loss to Midland.
Tulsa (25-35, 65-62) jumped on the scoreboard first against RoughRiders (34-25, 70-58) starter Mason Englert (1-1) in the third inning. Englert balked in the first run, allowing Andy Pages to score, before ceding a two-run double to Leonel Valera to left to make it 3-0.
In his home debut, the Forney, Texas native Englert pitched into the sixth inning, allowing three runs - all earned - over his 5.2 innings while striking out eight and walking one.
Frisco answered back in the bottom of the third with a Jonathan Ornelas RBI single, scoring Trevor Hauver, to cut the deficit to 3-1.
The Drillers then blew the game open in the seventh, beginning with an RBI groundout from Valera to push the score to 4-1. Justin Yurchak and Pages then each hit two-run singles and Kody Hoese singled home the inning's sixth run to balloon the score to 9-1.
After Ornelas scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the eighth, the Drillers put up five more runs in the top of the ninth. Ryan Ward began the scoring by coming home on a wild pitch prior to Kenneth Bethencourt grounding an RBI single to increase the advantage to 11-2. Jeren Kendall then doubled in a run and Valera plated a pair more with a single to make it 14-2.
Frisco was held to just three hits on the offensive side.
Guillermo Zuniga (4-3) earned the win in relief for the Drillers, allowing just one hit over 1.1 innings.
The RoughRiders continue their final home stand of the regular season with game five against the Drillers Saturday night at 6:35 p.m. LHP Avery Weems (2-6, 5.22) starts for the RoughRiders against RHP Nick Nastrini (1-1, 3.48) for Tulsa.
