Arkansas Travelers News Release
TULSA, OKLAHOMA - The Tulsa Drillers scored five unanswered runs after falling behind in the second inning in a 5-3 defeat of the Arkansas Travelers at Drillers Stadium on Monday night. In windy and cold conditions, the Travs bats cooled off with just two base hits over the last seven innings. Left fielder Nate Sutton dropped a fly ball hit by Darin Holcomb in the seventh inning to allow the winning run to score.
The Travs were just 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position and left 11 runners left on base including two runners left in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
Drillers reliever Andy Graham (1-1) spun 2.1 innings without allowing a run on one base hit, two walks and four strikeouts to pick up the win. Right hander Bryan Rembisz (0-1) took the loss allowing one unearned run on no base hits, two walks and a strikeout in 2.1 innings.
Travs first baseman Mark Trumbo led off the top of the second with a single and advanced to third when designated hitter Patrick Breen singled to right. Tulsa right hander Sam Deduno threw wildly on an attempted pickoff at first base bringing Trumbo home. Breen got to third when third baseman Wilberto Ortiz singled, then Sutton bounced into a double play to score Breen. Deduno issued a two-out walk to shortstop Gary Patchett followed by another walk to Peter Bourjos. Second baseman Ryan Mount put the Travs on top 3-0 with an RBI single to left field.
Arkansas right hander Tommy Mendoza started the game in his double-A debut. He gave up a triple to Tulsa catcher Mike McKenry to begin the second, and Cole Garner's sacrifice fly cut the Travs lead to 3-1.
McKenry led off the fourth inning with a single then ran to third base when Garner doubled past third base. Right fielder Daniel Carte tied the game with a bouncing ball past first base for a two-run double.
Mendoza finished 4.2 innings in his season debut and was charged with three runs on seven base hits and five strikeouts.
Rembisz relieved with two outs in the sixth inning and retired six in a row until he walked Jeff Kindel with two outs in the seventh inning. Holcomb then drove a pitch through the wind to left field backing Sutton to the warning track. He dropped the ball on the track allowing Kindel to score for a 4-3 Tulsa lead.
The Travs couldn't take advantage of a leadoff walk to Ortiz in the eighth inning. Even after he stole second base, Ortiz was stranded as right handed pitcher Shane Lindsay struck out Patchett and got Mount to fly out.
Left handed reliever Barret Browning came on for the eighth and allowed hits to three of the first four batters he faced. An RBI double by Daniel Mayora brought home Garner giving Tulsa 5-3 lead.
Right handed reliever Andrew Johnston (3) pitched a perfect ninth inning for the save.
Time of game was 2:55 and the paid attendance was 2,111.
The second game of the series is set for Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. The Travs have right hander Amalio Diaz (0-2, 8.49) scheduled to pitch against Tulsa lefty Keith Weiser (1-1, 3.31)
