Winnipeg Blue Bombers News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers congratulate their runningback Troy Mills for his induction into the Sacramento State Hall of Fame this past weekend.
The school feted Mills as part of their annual Hall of Fame Weekend, which featured its annual Green & Gold Game Apr. 19 and its Hall of Fame Banquet Apr. 20. The banquet took place at Sacramento's Holiday Inn Capital Plaza.
Mills was inducted along with fellow Hornets alumni members Jamie Berry, Randy Bingham, Cal Boyes, Fred "Hoot" Gibson, Bill Kutzer and Lou Sorrentino.
Mills had a stellar collegiate career with the Sacramento State Hornets. He became the first player from the school to appear in the East-West Shrine Bowl - a feat he achieved in 1991 as a representative of the West squad. The only Hornet player to hold that honor since Mills left the school is runningback Charles Roberts - also a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
Playing two seasons with the Hornets, Mills was known as "the Bounty Hunter" in college. He was an NCAA Division II Kodak All-American in 1991. He totaled 2,771 rushing yards and 25 rushing touchdowns in his two years at the school.
Mills was one of the school's all-time leading rushers when he left the program. He held the school records for single-season rushing yards (1,668 yards in 1991), highest average per carry (7.5 yards per carry in 1991), single-season rushing touchdowns (17 TDs in 1991) and single-season points scored (126 points in 1991).
One collegiate highlight for Mills was his record-breaking performance against the University of the Pacific in 1991. In that game, he broke the school's single-game all-purpose yards mark with 346 yards (27 rushes for 193 yards, 5 receptions for 75 yards and 3 kickoff returns for 78 yards).
A First-Team All Western Conference All-Star as a junior in 1990, Mills became Sacramento State's first runningback in five years to notch back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons.
He was the team's Offensive Most Valuable Player and Outstanding Offensive Back in 1990. That same season, he led the league in punt return average with 24.1 yards per return.
