July 13, 2015 - West Coast League (WCL)
Yakima Valley Pippins News Release
YAKIMA, Wash. - The Yakima Valley Pippins had three players selected to the 2015 West Coast League All-Star Game on Monday, with infielder/outfielder Jace Van De Brake, and pitchers Darrion Simons and Wyatt Mills earning nominations.
"Obviously, we're proud of the accomplishments of those three," said Pippins Manager Marcus McKimmy. "They had very solid first halves for us that were a big part of our success, and we anticipate them being a big part of what we're doing going forward, as well."
Van De Brake, a Yakima-native, has been a consistent bat in the Pippins lineup this season. Through 29 games, he's hitting .292 with 4 doubles, 1 triple and 15 RBI. Coming off his redshirt freshman year at Gonzaga, he has split his time between the infield and outfield for Yakima Valley.
Mills, a teammate of Van De Brake's at Gonzaga, has been one of the best relievers in the WCL this season. He leads the team with 12 appearances and has gone 2-1 with a team-best 1.45 ERA. He also leads the squad with six saves, which puts him 2nd in the WCL behind Lars Rider of Cowlitz.
Simons, a freshman from Yakima Valley Community College, has been one of the key contributors to the Pippins starting rotation this season. The lefty is 2-3 with a 3.23 ERA in seven appearances. His best start came on July 3, when he allowed just one run and one hit over eight innings. Simons leads the WCL in strikeouts (39).
Other Pippins that were worthy of nominations included infielder Mitch Skaggs (.319 average, 9 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run and 22 RBI) and pitcher Mitch Yada (2-1 record, 3.25 ERA).
Van De Brake, Mills and Simons will join all-stars from around the WCL Monday, July 20 at Joe Martin Field in Bellingham, Washington for the league's annual midsummer showcase. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm and the Pippins will offer a broadcast of the game on 1460 ESPN Yakima.
