Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Center fielder Brandon Moss came through with a game-winning two out, two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning to help lead the Indianapolis Indians to a 4-2 win and the series split with the Gwinnett Braves on Tuesday night at Victory Field.
With the win, Indianapolis moves back to the .500 mark, evening their record at 23-23, while Gwinnett falls to 20-25 with the loss. The win for the Tribe helps them to gain the 2-2 series split and improves their record to 4-8 against the Gwinnett Braves all-time with the two teams set to face off for four more May 31 to June 3.
With the score tied 2-2 entering the eighth, 3B Pedro Alvarez drew a key one-out base on balls, before C Luke Carlin was granted a two-out intentional pass to put runners at first and second with Moss at the plate. Braves' reliever Mariano Gomez (1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 SO), who eventually suffered the loss to drop to 1-2 on the season, then surrendered a wild pitch to advance Alvarez and Carlin and set the stage for Moss, who came through in the clutch with his first hit of the series driving a two-bagger to deep center field to push the Tribe ahead 4-2.
Neither starter figured in the decision as Indians' RHP Daniel McCutchen (7.0 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO) allowed just two runs on seven hits and no walks, while striking out two over seven innings of work and Braves' RHP Chris Resop (5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 8 SO) struck out eight and allowed just two runs (one earned) on four hits over five innings to lower his ERA to the second lowest mark in the International League at 2.01.
Tribe RHP Steven Jackson (1.1 IP, 2 H) came on in relief of McCutchen and allowed just two hits over 1.1 innings to earn his first win of the season, before fellow reliever Jean Machi (0.2 IP) escaped a ninth inning Gwinnett come back attempt by inducing C Clint Sammons into a game-ending 1-6-3 double play to earn his fifth save of the season.
Gwinnett jumped out to an early lead as 1B Freddie Freeman led off the second inning with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by 3B Joe Thurston and came plateward on a single by SS Brandon Hicks. The base hit for Hicks gave him at least one base knock in each game of the series against the Tribe and was the first of his season high four hits on the evening as he added a ground-rule double in the fourth, a soft single in the seventh and a base hit to center in the ninth..
Indianapolis evened the score in the top of the third in the exact same fashion as the Braves plated their run in the second as SS Brian Friday led off the frame with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by starting pitcher Daniel McCutchen and came around to score on an infield single by LF Jose Tabata. The base knock for Tabata tied him with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre shortstop Eduardo Nunez for the International League lead in hits with 58.
Thurston powered the Braves back into the lead in the top of the fourth when he blasted a solo shot to right field for his fourth long ball of the season. However, Indianapolis quickly answered back and tied the score at 2-2 in their half of the frame as 3B Pedro Alvarez led of with a two-bagger to right and came around to score on a throwing error by Gwinnett.
Hicks (4-for-4, 1 RBI) was the only player for either side to collect multiple hits, while Alvarez (1-for-2, 2 R, 2 BB), Carlin (0-for-1, 1 R, 3 BB) and Friday (1-for-2, 1 R, 2 BB) all scored runs and drew multiple walks for the Indians.
Following a day off, the Indians hit the road for an eight-game trip, beginning in Charlotte on Thursday, May 27 at 7:15 p.m. RHP Hayden Penn is expected to get the start for the Indians, while RHP Jeff Marquez is the probable for the Knights.
The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley on the call. The pre-game show begins at 6:55 p.m.
