Chiefs Lose 6-3, Split Series with Toledo

Syracuse, N.Y. - The Toledo Mud Hens beat the Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, 6-3 in the final game of their four game series Tuesday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. Syracuse and Toledo split the series with each team winning two games.

The Mud Hens jumped out to a 2-0 advantage before the Chiefs even had a chance to bat. Scott Sizemore, Carlos Guillen and Ryan Strieby all tagged Syracuse starter Matt Chico for base hits in the inning.

After the Chiefs got one run back on a second inning sac fly by Luis Ordaz, Toledo grabbed another run in the third. Max Leon torched a single to right and Guillen coasted into second for another double to begin the inning for the Mud Hens. Strieby's grounder to shortstop Pedro Lopez scored Leon from third, making it 3-1 Toledo.

The Mud Hens broke it open with three more runs in the seventh, stretching their lead to 6-1. Two of the runs came on Strieby's two-out single up the middle, giving the outfielder his fourth fifth RBIs of the game.

Syracuse third basemen Chase Lambin hit a two-run homer to right to cut the lead to 6-3 but Mud Hens closer Jay Sborz came back and struck out Chris Duncan and Ordaz to end the game. The home run was Lambin's sixth of the year, tying him with Pete Orr for the team lead.

Toledo starter Max Scherzer tossed seven innings of three-hit baseball for the win. The right-hander surrendered one run and struck out seven in his second start of the year for the Mud Hens.

Chico lost for the first time this season, giving up three runs and six hits during his five innings of work for Syracuse.

Chiefs first baseman Josh Whitesell and Lambin each had a pair of hits, combining for four of the team's six hits. Sizemore, Guillen, Strieby and catcher Max St. Pierre all had multi-hit games for the Mud Hens.

The Chiefs will have a day off Wednesday before heading to Scranton for a Thursday night doubleheader. Right-hander Jeff Mandel will pitch for Syracuse in the first game of the doubleheader against Scranton's Zach McAllister (3-2, 4.33). First pitch will be at 5:35.
