Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
TROY, NY - The Tri-City ValleyCats were able to stave off a late charge from the Williamsport Crosscutters at BB&T park in Williamsport, winning by a final score of 5-3 on Thursday night.
Alex McKenna led the way for the ValleyCats offensively with his first ever three-hit game.
Jeremy Pena and Austin Dennis each rallied two hits, with Dennis leading the team with 2 runs batted in.
Luis Encarnacion, who used to play for Williamsport as recently as one year ago, delivered the keynote for Tri-City, when he hit his third home run of the season to lead off the third inning.
Dennis then extended the ValleyCats' lead to 2-0 with an RBI-double in the fourth inning to score Pena.
The ValleyCats then scored a pair in the sixth with Dennis' second run-scoring hit of the night and a sacrifice fly from Carlos Machado.
Alex McKenna put a cap on Tri-City's scoring with an RBI-triple in the seventh inning that scored Jeremy Pena.
Entering the eighth inning, the ValleyCats' pitching staff had only allowed one hit, behind a dominant start from Shawn Dubin.
Dubin went three innings, giving up just one hit before handing the ball off to Brett Conine.
Conine hurled two and two thirds innings without giving up a hit to earn the first win of his Minor League career.
Mark Moclair then came in and struck out five of the first six batters he faced, before failing to make it out of the eighth inning.
The Crosscutters put up a three-spot, with Hansel Paulino getting called out of the bullpen to earn a five-out save.
The ValleyCats' first win of their six-game road trip amplifies their record to 15-11, now two games ahead of the Vermont Lake Monsters for first place in the Stedler Division.
The Crosscutters and ValleyCats will play in the rubber match of their three-game series on Friday night, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
On Tuesday, July 17 the ValleyCats will return home on "Irish Night" to throw off a three-game series with the New York Mets-affiliated Brooklyn Cyclones at Joe Bruno Stadium.
