Tri-City Begins 2020 with Fourth Consecutive Win

Urbandale, IA - The Tri-City Storm defeated the Des Moines Buccaneers Friday night at Buccaneer Arena by a final score of 3-1. Tri-City recorded its first win in the 2020 calendar year and has now won each of its last four games. Goal scorers in the game for Tri-City included; Mark Estapa, Nick Portz, Matthew Knies. Tri-City seeks its fifth win in a row tomorrow night in another road matchup against the Des Moines Buccaneers. Puck drop is set for 6:05pm.

Mark Estapa scored his third goal of the season in the opening four minutes of the game to give the Storm a 1-0 lead. Estapa's goal was netted at the 3:40 mark of the period and was assisted by Carter Mazur and Calvin Dybicz. Mazur's assist was his third of the season, and the assist by Dybicz was his fifth of the year. Minutes later, Nick Portz scored his tenth goal of the season to give the Storm a two-goal lead. Portz's goal was assisted by Colby Ambrosio and Mike Koster. With less than three minutes to play in the 1st period, Matthew Knies scored his eighth goal of the season to give the Storm a 3-0 lead. Knies goal was assisted by Colby Ambrosio and Carter Mazur. Ambrosio and Mazur each recorded two assists in the game. Tri-City outshot Des Moines 11-7 in the 1st period and carried a three-goal lead into the 2nd period.

Des Moines outshot Tri-City 9-8 in the 2nd period, but no scoring plays would leave the Storm with a three-goal lead entering the 3rd period. The only scoring play of the 3rd period was by Des Moines' Mason Nevers. Nevers' goal at 9:49 of the 3rd period brought the Buccaneers back within two goals of Tri-City's lead. The Storm outshot Des Moines 12-6 in the 3rd period and won the game by a final score of 3-1. The Storm outshot the Buccaneers 31-22 in the game.

Daniel Allin made 21 saves on 22 shots to record the win in net for the Storm. Tri-City jumped from 3rd to 2nd in the USHL's Western Conference standings. Tonight's result gives Tri-City an opportunity to set a new season high for most consecutive wins in tomorrow's game. Following tomorrow's road game at Buccaneer Arena, Tri-City returns home to the Viaero Center next weekend for back to back home game's against the Waterloo Black Hawks.
