Trezza's Grand Slam, 5 RBI Top Boulders 11-7

Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Alex Trezza had five runs batted in, including the first Worcester Tornadoes grand slam in 2012 as the visitors topped the Rockland Boulders 11-7 at Provident Bank Park on Friday night. The Tornadoes survived a two-out, six-run rally in the sixth by Rockland, trailing for only an inning and a half.

Trezza hit two homers in the contest, including a solo shot in the fourth inning to give Worcester a 2-0 lead. One frame later, he provided four RBI with one swing of the bat. At that point, the Tornadoes led 6-1.

Phil Negus worked 5.2 innings in his no decision, allowing four runs (all earned) on three hits, five walks and three strikeouts. He walked the bases loaded with two down in the sixth, with all three batters working the count full. Orlando Mercado saw 11 pitches in his plate appearance, chasing Negus from the game.

Michael Bourdon allowed all three runs he inherited from Negus to score, and gave up two runs of his own. Nick Serino, who improved to 1-1 on the season also allowed both of his inherited runners to cross the plate, gave up a run of his own, and was temporarily on the hook for the loss as a result. Serino totaled 2.1 innings, striking out two batters, walking one and gave up five hits in the victory.

Nick Salotti tied the game at 7-7 leading the top of the eighth off with a homer against Chris Rubio, who also allowed another pair of runs on Tony Patane and Brendon Kelliher sacrifice flies, scoring Johnny Welch and Chris Torres, respectively. The Torres double (after a Welch walk) set up both productive outs. Rubio had allowed just one earned run all season entering his appearance.

The Tornadoes added two more insurance runs in the ninth, as Alex Trezza and Cameron Monger-- who was a fielding replacement the inning before-- came in to score on a Welch RBI double. Worcester ended the game with six extra base hits.

In the ninth, the Boulders brought the tying run to the plate against Mike Gedman, but the tall southpaw started a 1-6-3 double play with the bases loaded to end the game.

Zach Zuercher will be on the mound Saturday as the Tornadoes attempt to start a win streak at 7:00pm. Tornadoes Pre-Game Live begins at 6:50 on USTREAM.tv.
