Trezza Hits for the Cycle in Record-Setting 18-2 Win
August 2, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release
To say Tuesday morning's win was a great day for the Tornadoes at the plate is a vast understatement. Alex Trezza hit for the cycle and the team set a franchise record for hits in a game (25) for the second time this season in an 18-2 victory at Provident Bank Park over the Rockland Boulders.
Ryan Lobban earned his second win in a Tornadoes uniform in 2011 and improved to 3-0 overall with six innings pitched. The southpaw starter struck out four, walked five and allowed eight hits, giving up a couple of runs (one earned). Sean Gregory, Nick Serino and Rick Asadoorian each came on for scoreless innings of relief to shut down the Boulders' offense.
The game after Worcester allowed five runs in the first and three in the fourth en route to an 8-2 loss, it notched six in the second and two in the third before adding a run in the fourth. Every Tornadoes player grabbed a hit in the second, with Anthony Sosnoskie's solo homer beginning the scoring. Nick Salotti reached base twice in the inning, and Mark Minicozzi's homer gave the Central Mass. club more than enough runs for the remainder of the game (making it 6-0).
Worcester hitters combined for ten extra-base hits: four doubles, two triples and four homers. Rockland left 13 runners on base, which is a season-high for Tornadoes' opponents.
The 25 hits Worcester garnered were the second franchise-high set this year in that category. The Tornadoes had 20 hits on May 31 in a 20-1 triumph over the New York Federals, which set the bar even higher than any performance in the team's first six seasons. Five players had at least three hits, with Trezza's five leading the way (one single, two doubles, a triple and a homer in a 5-for-6 afternoon). Abraham Nunez finished the game with three singles, a walk, a homer, three RBI and four runs scored.
The rubber game of the series is Wednesday night, as the Tornadoes will send Kevin Cooper to the mound against Boulders Ace Bobby Blevins. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm in Ramapo, with audio coverage beginning with Tornadoes Pre-Game Live on USTREAM at 6:50.
