New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - New England Revolution Academy midfielder Trevor Buns (Southborough, Mass. - 2001) has been named the 2020 UnitedHealthcare Revolution Academy Player of the Year for the 2019-20 season. Burns becomes the sixth different recipient of the honor, joining Revolution Academy alumni Zachary Herivaux (2014), Justin Rennicks (2015, 2016), Joe Brito (2017), Kevin Vang (2018), and Tyler Freitas (2019).
Burns has spent seven years in the Revolution Academy program, having joined the club ahead of the 2013-14 season at the age of 12 - the longest-tenured Academy player in the 12-year history of the program. Over the last two seasons, he was selected as a team captain for the Under-19 side, playing in every match and scoring seven goals. He finished his Revolution Academy career with 107 career games played and 22 goals scored. In a shortened 2019-20 season, Burns suited up in 14 games for the U-19s and scored two goals.
"We're incredibly proud of all Trevor has accomplished in his time with the Revolution Academy," said Bryan Scales, the Revolution's Director of Youth Development. "Trevor has displayed tremendous leadership and played a crucial role for all our Academy teams over the past several years. It's a well-deserved honor and we look forward to what the future has in store for him."
In his first season with the Revolution Academy, Burns featured in 25 games for the Under-14 team, netting a personal-best 11 goals. With the Under-15 side, he refined his game across 18 appearances, including 13 starts, during the 2016-17 campaign. Following his torrid start in the Revolution program, Burns started every game in which he played during the 2017-18 season. He would play only seven games, all starts, at the U-17 level in 2017-18 before earning a regular spot on the Under-19 side, where he started 21 games and scored three goals in 2018-19.
Burns, who is the son of former Revolution and United States Men's National Team defender Mike Burns, will attend Georgetown University in the fall to play for the reigning NCAA Division I National Champions. In the meantime, he has been training with Revolution II since the team returned from hiatus following a months-long shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. Burns has also trained with the first team on several occasions since the age of 15, most notably spending the 2018 preseason with the Revolution in Tucson, Ariz.
Burns was also selected to attend the Generation Adidas Elite Soccer Program (ESP) during the 2016 AT&T MLS All-Star Week in San Jose, Calif. He was also invited to Bradenton, Fla. for an Under-15 U.S. Youth National Team futures camp in 2016.
