Trenton beats Binghamton 4-2 with rally in 9th

(Binghamton, NY)- Kevin Howard hit the go-ahead RBI triple in the ninth inning to lift the Thunder to a 4-2 victory over the Binghamton Mets at NYSEG Stadium on Sunday afternoon in the rubber game of the "subway series".

Trenton (34-34) rallied with two outs in the ninth inning off of hard throwing Binghamton relief pitcher Matt Lindstrom (1-2). After an Omir Santos walk, Kevin Howard tripled into the right field corner to score Santos and give the Thunder a 3-2 lead. Two batters later, Gabe Lopez delivered an RBI single to score Howard and increase the lead to 4-2.

J.B. Cox (3-2) tossed a 1-2-3 eight inning to earn the victory for the Thunder. Trenton starting pitcher Philip Hughes tossed seven innings and earned a no-decision. Hughes scattered six hits and gave up two runs while striking out a season-high 11. The 11 strikeouts by Hughes are the most for a Thunder pitcher this season. Binghamton (30-39) starting pitcher Willie Collazo went seven innings and gave up five hits and two earned runs.

The Thunder took a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning on a solo home run by Vince Faison. The home run was Faison's eighth of the season. Binghamton knotted the score at 2-2 with a solo home run by Jay Caligiuri in the bottom half of the seventh inning.

Trenton will start an eight-game homestand and a four-game series against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Monday Night at 7:05pm at Waterfront Park. Tyler Clippard (2-9) will start for the Thunder against New Hampshire's Kyle Yates (3-5).
