
Trenton And New Britain Split A Pair Of Games

(Trenton, NJ)- Trenton and New Britain split a pair of games on Sunday afternoon. The Thunder won the completion of a suspended game by the score of 2-1. The Rock Cats won the regularly scheduled seven-inning game 5-3. New Britain leads the Thunder by two games for second place in the Northern Division with eight games to go in the regular season.
In the suspended game, Trenton had taken a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on Saturday night. Third baseman Marcos Vechionacci led off the bottom of the third inning with a solo home run off of New Britain Starting Pitcher Ryan Mullins. Trenton tacked on a run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-out RBI double by Catcher P.J. Pilittere. Trenton Starting Pitcher Zach McAllister threw 4 2/3 innings before the game got suspended. When play resumed on Sunday, RHP Humberto Sanchez (2-0) came on and tossed 2 1/3 innings to pick up the win. New Britain tightened the score to 2-1 with a run in the top of the seventh inning on a solo home run by Third baseman Luke Hughes. But, Sanchez would retire Shortstop Steve Singleton on a fly out for the final out of the game. Vechionacci had two hits in the win for the Thunder. Mullins (10-11) allowed five hits and two runs in four innings to take the loss.
In the regularly scheduled game, New Britain scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Designated Hitter Erik Lis had an RBI groundout to give the Rock Cats a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Second baseman Brian Dinkelman connected on an RBI single to make it 2-0. The Thunder pulled within 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-out RBI triple by Center fielder Austin Krum. But, New Britain Reliever Spencer Steedley retired Second baseman Matt Cusick on a line-out for the final out of the frame. The Rock Cats tacked on three runs in the sixth inning to increase the lead to 5-1. With two outs in the sixth inning, Third baseman Luke Hughes singled off of Thunder Starting Pitcher Ryan Pope. He advanced to second base on a walk to Designated Hitter Erik Lis. Thunder Reliever Wilkins Arias came on for Pope and proceeded to walk Dinkelman to load the bases with two outs. Shortstop Steve Singleton followed with a single to left field. The single scored Hughes. Lis and Dinkelman also each scored on the play as the throw home from Trenton Left fielder James Cooper kicked off of the glove of Trenton Catcher Kyle Anson for an error. Steedley (1-0) picked up the win. The loss was charged to Pope (5-12). Pope allowed four hits and four runs (three earned) in 5 2/3 innings. Krum hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning for the Thunder. He finished the game 2 x 4 with a triple, home run, run, and an RBI.
Trenton and New Britain wrap up their four-game series from Waterfront Park on Monday night. RHP Josh Schmidt (8-3, 1.51) will start for Trenton against New Britain RHP Matt Fox (9-9, 3.64). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
