Connecticut Defenders News Release

HARRISBURG, PA- After clinching their first Northern Division Crown in seven years, Connecticut (79-54) showed no signs of slacking as they battled with Harrisburg in a Sunday afternoon affair and hold on for a 6-3 win at Metro Bank Park.

The Defenders regained the lead in the fourth inning on a LF-Bobby Felmy two run homerun (6) over the right-field wall and Connecticut never trailed from that point as they grabbed a 2-1 lead in the four game series.

Connecticut took an early lead in the second when CF-Mike Mooney ripped his sixth triple of the season into left centerfield and then scored on a Felmy RBI single.

Harrisburg touched the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning taking advantage of a leadoff walk to 3B-Matt Whitney who later scored on CF-Francisco Plasencia's RBI double.

With the score 3-1, Connecticut struck again in the sixth as 3B-Ramon Castro belted a solo homerun to left center. SS-Sharlon Schoop continued to add to the score with an RBI single in the seventh that drove in C-Jackson Williams who led off with a single.

The Senators inched closer in the home half of the inning, all with two outs. RF-Ricardo Nanita pulled a solo jack over the right-field wall, SS-Freddie Bynum singled and 2B-Jemel Spearman legged out a RBI triple to pull Harrisburg within two.

The Defenders would add an insurance run in the eighth on a little bit of trickery. With two outs and runners on the corners, Felmy took off for second as 3B-Ramon Castro broke for home but C-Sean Rooney elected to get Felmy who got caught in a rundown long enough for the run to count.

Defenders reliever RHP-Dan Griffin (8-6) was fantastic tossing four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out five while picking up the win and closer LHP-Matt Yourkin shut the door on his seventh save of the season. Senators' starter LHP-Aaron Thompson (0-3) fired six innings in the loss but allowed four earned runs off eight hits, walked two and struck out one.

Connecticut looks for the series win tomorrow night as RHP-Daryl Maday (6-4) takes the hill to faceoff against the Sens' RHP-Erick Arnesen (7-5) at 7:00pm from Metro Bank Park.
