Chesapeake Baysox News Release
READING, Penn. - The Baysox got stellar outings from Pedro Beato and Brandon Erbe to sweep a doubleheader in Reading. After rains suspended last night's contest, Beato came on to shut down the Phillies en route to a 1-0 victory. In the nightcap, Erbe limited Reading to two earned runs in 6.0 innings as the Baysox won 5-2. With the victories, Bowie moves to within a game of Reading for second place in the Eastern League Southern Division.
Before the action was stopped Saturday night, first baseman Eric Crozier put the Baysox on the board with an inside-the-park home run in the second inning against right-hander Brett Myers. The lefty slugger took a 2-0 pitch from Myers off the wall in right field. The ball bounced back toward the infield on the ricochet, allowing Crozier to come all the way around and put the Baysox on top 1-0.
That would be all the offense the Baysox needed, as the pitching staff shut down the Phillies offense over 7.0 innings as Beato earned his first Double-A victory. Ryohei Tanaka started the game for the Baysox, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings of work before the stoppage. Beato took the mound with a runner on first and one out in the second inning and never looked back, shutting out the Phillies over 5.0 innings of relief.
Reading put the leadoff man aboard against Beato to start the bottom of the seventh on a single by Steve Susdorf. After advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt, Luis Lebron came on for the Baysox looking to earn his sixth save of the season. The right-hander struck out Freddy Galvis swinging for the second out of the inning, then followed with a called third strike to Ozzie Chavez to end the game. Lebron has not allowed an earned run over his last 11 appearances, striking out 18 and walking only one in 13.2 innings of work since July 28.
In game two, Erbe allowed two earned runs in the bottom of the third inning to put the Baysox in a 2-0 hole. Dominic Brown and Kevin Mahar paced the inning with RBI singles for the Phillies, giving right-hander Vance Worley a two-run advantage.
The Baysox stormed back in the fifth inning with a four spot to take the lead. With catcher Adam Donachie on first and two outs, shortstop Jason White singled to right field. Brown misplayed the ball in right, allowing Donachie to advance to third putting men on the corners and two out. After center fielder Danny Figueroa was hit by a pitch, twin brother Paco Figueroa brought everybody home with a triple to right. The three-bagger gives Figueroa 27 RBI on the season, while giving him at least one hit in 10 of his last 11 games. Left-hander Mike Zagurski came on in relief for Reading, but unleashed a wild pitch allowing Figueroa to come home with the fourth Baysox run.
The Baysox would add another run in the top of the seventh inning, as Danny Figueroa was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game to put a runner aboard. Right fielder Ambiorix Concepcion would bring him home later in the inning, lacing a two-out RBI double down the line in left to extend the lead to 5-2. Figueroa's two hit-by-pitch give the outfielder 16 HBP on the season in only 76 games. The Baysox record for most HBP in a season is 19, set by Jose Millares during the 1995 season.
Erbe settled down after the third inning to retire 10 of the next 11 batters he faced. The right-hander tied a season-high with eight strikeouts, leaving after 6.0 innings allowing two earned runs on five hits.
Right-hander Eddie Gamboa came on in the bottom of the seventh, looking to shut the door on the Phillies and preserve Erbe's fourth win of the season. The right-hander allowed a leadoff walk to Tim Kennelly, but retired the next three in order to earn his first save for the Baysox this season.
The two teams will meet up for a doubleheader again tomorrow night. Game time is set for 5:35 p.m. at First Energy Stadium in Reading. The Baysox return home on Tuesday, September 1, to begin a three-game set with the Binghamton Mets at Prince George's Stadium.
