Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC- Myrtle Beach Pelicans SS Jaime Trejo entered tonight's ballgame with just one career homerun, he left with a career total of three. Trejo delivered two homers to help the Pelicans overpower the Winston-Salem Warthogs on Monday night at Coastal Federal Field in front of a crowd that was treated to a little bit of everything as a full moon ominously shined down on what was one of the more wild and wacky games of the season. Two ejections, four lead changes, three homeruns, nine pitchers, a hit batsman to bring in the game-winning run in the final at bat, and three hours and nineteen minutes later the Pelicans took game one, 8-7.

Before the top of the 1st inning had even come to a close the Pelicans starting pitcher, Sean White, and the Birds manager, Randy Ingle, had been ejected from the game. White tossed a pitch that rose high and tight to Warthogs RF Thomas Collaro. The wild pitch prompted homeplate umpire, Mark Lollo, to immediately toss out White. Ingle argued the ejection for a few heated minutes before Lollo tossed him out as well. After the drama, Collaro capped off a three-run opening inning with a two-run double into the alley in right-centerfield to give the Hogs an early 3-0 lead. Myrtle Beach got straight to work in the bottom of the 1st inning. After the Pelicans loaded the bases with just one out 1B Carlos Guzman roped a two-run double into the right-centerfield gap, cutting the Hogs lead to 3-2.

In the top of the 2nd the Warthogs got back-to-back singles from 2B Josh Shaffer and SS Mike Myers with one out. After the pair of singles, LF Noah Hall cranked his 6th HR of the season, a three-run blast to extend the visitor's lead to 6-2. The Pelicans chipped away at the Warthogs lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning thanks to a solo-shot off the bat of Trejo, just his first of the season and the second round-tripper of his career, to cut the lead in half at 6-3. The Birds came up with another run in the bottom of the 5th inning thanks to an RBI single from CF Ardley Jansen to make the score 6-4.

Winston-Salem held on to their two-run advantage until the bottom of the 7th when Trejo struck again, this time with a three-run homer to give Myrtle Beach their first lead of the night, 7-6. Trejo's 3rd HR of his career, and 2nd of the night (and the season) swung all the momentum in favor of the Birds.

The Warthogs tied the ballgame in the top of the 8th on the strength of a clutch RBI double from DH Travis Hinton, giving the Warthogs hope that they could come back to steal what appeared to be an easy win in the early innings.

With one out in the bottom of the 9th inning Trejo came through yet again, not with a long ball this time, but with a simple base hit to spark a rally. Trejo's single was followed by a single from Doetsch and a walk to 2B Martin Prado. With the sacks full LF Josh Burrus took a Fabio Castro pitch to the ankle and Trejo trotted across the plate to give the Pelicans a highly dramatic, come from behind, walk-off victory, 8-7.

Offensively for the Pelicans Trejo finished the night 3-4 with two HR's (1,2), four RBI, and three runs scored. Doetsch went 3-6 with a double and a run scored, while C Jarrod Saltalamacchia added a 2-5 night at the plate. On the hill relievers Wes Letson, Bryan Digby, and Jacob Blakeney combined to toss the final 5.1 innings, holding the Hogs down.

The winning pitcher for the Pelicans was reliever Jacob Blakeney (W, 1-0) who tossed a perfect top of the 9th. Blakeney was one of five pitchers that the Pelicans used in the win. Castro was charged with the loss after plunking Burrus with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th. The Pelicans improve to 21-24 with the win.

Tomorrow night the Pelicans play host to the Winston-Salem Warthogs for game two of the three-game set. First pitch is slated for 7:02 pm.
