Springfield Cardinals News Release
North Little Rock, AR - The Arkansas Travelers took the series opener, 9-4, against the Springfield Cardinals before 3,739 fans at Dickey-Stephens Park on Thursday night.
The Travs (6-7) broke through with an opportunistic rally against RHP Daniel Poncedeleon (L, 1-1) in the bottom of the second. After a walk and a single started the stanza, Poncedeleon battled back with a strikeout of DH Wade Wass for the inning's first out. However, a second walk loaded the bases, before RF Brandon Bayardi was hit by a pitch to force in the game's first run. Poncedeleon struck out SS Anthony Phillips, but then hit LF Bo Way to force in another run, making it a 2-0 lead for Arkansas.
The Cardinals (7-6) responded right away with one run in the top of the third against RHP Jordan Kipper (W, 1-0). Leading off the inning, DH Chris Jacobs launched a mammoth solo shot to left field, his second home run of the year, slicing the deficit to 2-1.
Arkansas, though, came back with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth, before adding two more in the fifth. 1B Eric Aguilera led off the fifth inning with a single, and then raced around on an RBI triple from 3B Cal Towey. RHP Josh Lucas's next pitch skipped away from C Carson Kelly, with the wild pitch enabling Towey to charge in and make it 5-1.
Springfield refused to fall too far behind, racing back within one run of tying it with four tallies. With two away, 1B Luke Voit worked a walk to extend the inning. RF David Washington followed with a single to put two men on for LF Collin Radack. Playing in front of family and friends, the Conway, Arkansas native Radack ripped an RBI double to left field, scoring Voit and moving Washington to third. 3B Paul DeJong then came up and belted a two-run triple to right field, plating both Washington and Radack and cutting the Arkansas lead to just 5-4.
The Travelers, however, stretched the advantage right back out with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Singles from Phillips and Way started the inning with two runners on. After a strikeout dealt by Lucas, 2B Alex Yarbrough brought in Phillips with an RBI sacrifice fly. With two on and two down, 1B Eric Aguilera lined a two-run home run to right field, opening the lead back to four runs, 8-4.
Arkansas added one final insurance run with an RBI single from Yarbrough in the eighth, accounting for the 9-4 final score in the Travelers win.
