San Antonio Missions News Release
Midland used a 16-hit attack to roll to a 9-2 win over San Antonio in Thursday night's series opener at Wolff Stadium.
Midland opened scoring Thursday in the top of the second against San Antonio right-hander Luis Diaz when Matt Chapman and Viosergy Rosa opened the frame with consecutive doubles.
In the bottom of the third, the Missions answered against reigning Texas League Pitcher of the Week, Daniel Mengden, who had not allowed a run in either of his first two starts of 2016. Catcher Rocky Gale started the rally with a one-out single to left-center field. After a Jose Rondon double moved Gale to third, next batter, Nelson Ward tied the game at one with a sacrifice fly to right.
Midland countered right away in the top of the fourth, taking a 2-1 lead on Diaz with Josh Rodriguez's clutch, two-out RBI single to right.
The game slipped away from Diaz (1-2) and the Missions in the fifth as back-to-back homers by Ryon Healy and Chapman brought in four runs, growing the deficit to 6-1.
After the RockHounds added another run in the top of the sixth off reliever Kyle Bartsch, the Missions answered with one of their own in the bottom half, courtesy of Nick Torres' RBI double to left.
Rodriguez capped scoring in the ninth with a two-run shot off lefty Brandon Alger. Chapman, Rosa and Rodriguez each had three hits for Midland.
Though he finally gave up his first runs of the season, Mengden (1-0) picked up his first win after allowing just five hits over his six innings of work.
San Antonio (5-8) resumes its four-game series with Midland (8-5) Friday night at 7:05 PM. Former big leaguer Brandon Morrow (0-0, 0.00) will take the hill for the Missions, while the 'Hounds counter with fellow righty Joel Seddon (0-1, 17.55). The first 2,000 fans to enter Wolff Stadium will receive a free Pedro Martinez Missions Home Jersey courtesy of McCombs Ford West.
