Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Alex Burg drove in two runs and Preston Beck reached base four times as Frisco belted Corpus Christi 9-3 Friday at Whataburger Field before 6,485.
The Hooks have dropped three straight. Frisco has won seven of eight road contests in the young season.
A two-out walk haunted Francis Martes (1-1) and the Hooks during Frisco's five-run first. Ryan Cordell took second on a wild pitch after the base-on-balls and sprinted home when Ronald Guzman singled into left. Burg followed with a run-scoring hit and Zach Cone and Alberto Triunfel contributed RBI doubles.
Martes, lifted for Aaron West, lasted just 2/3 of an inning and 31 pitches (15 strikes). Martes walked two and struck Kellin Deglan with a pitch.
Corpus Christi (8-6) scored an unearned run in the second off Sam Wolff, Trent Woodward's one-out double plating newcomer James Ramsay. Ramsay, who singled in his initial Double-A plate appearance, should have been retired at second base if not for Triunfel's errant throw from shortstop.
Frisco quickly responded, putting up two scores. Beck's opening single conveyed into a run when Isiah Kiner-Falefa stroked a two-out single up the middle and Triunfel (fielder's choice) crossed on Teoscar Hernandez's misplay.
The RoughRiders (11-3) added a singleton off Chris Cotton in the fourth, Cordell's lead-off single followed by Guzman's double and a Beck single.
The Hooks touched Wolff for a second run the next inning, Derek Fisher's drive to the right-center field wall pushing Hernandez (one-out single) around the bases.
Wolff (3-0), a former University of New Mexico standout, earned the victory with five innings. He was responsible for five hits, a walk, and three strikeouts. Forty-nine of his 82 pitches were strikes.
Wolff's relief, Cody Buckel, walked the bases loaded in the home sixth, but Juan Grullon came on to fan Hernandez for the last out.
Burg's first homer of 2016 came off Brian Holmes in the eighth. Jack Mayfield countered by blasting his third yard shot of the year off Grullon. Holmes recorded six strikeouts over four frames.
Cordell owns a nine-game hitting streak.
Edison Frias (0-0) and Frisco left-hander Victor Payano (1-0) meet Saturday at 7:05. The first 1,750 fans receive a Hooks U.S. Air Force Jersey from CITGO.
