Travs Take Cards in 10

Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Arkansas Travelers scored a run in the eighth to tie and another in the tenth to win on Sunday, downing the Springfield Cardinals in ten innings by a score of 4-3 at Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock.

Cards' reliever Gary Daley (0-1) endured a tough tenth inning, walking a pair of hitters, then with the bases loaded, hit Brian Walker to force home the winning run.

Daley walked back-to-back hitters to open the tenth inning. Wil Ortiz followed with a sacrifice bunt, but first baseman Steven Hill tried to get the force at third base. Hill's throw was late, as the Travs loaded the bases without the aid of a hit. On an 0-2 pitch, Daley's breaking ball struck Walker in the foot, forcing home pinch runner Ivan Contreras to end the game.

The Cards led a three-run lead slip away, as Cards' starter Lance Lynn missed out on his 12th win of the year.

Springfield built their lead against Arkansas starter Jeremy Thorne, as Pete Kozma put the Cards on the board in the third, with a solo homer, his sixth of the year, to make it 1-0.

Tony Cruz's two-run single in the fourth made it a 3-0 game.

Lynn allowed a run in the fourth and another in the fifth, as Ryan Mount had a sac fly and Coby Smith brought home a run with an RBI double, making it a one-run game at 3-2.

Lynn was removed after six innings, after allowing just two runs on six hits.

After Marco Gonzalez worked a 1-2-3 seventh, Eduardo Sanchez was called upon to attempt the six-out save. Sanchez blew his second straight save opportunity though, coughing up Hank Conger's solo homer in the bottom of the eighth inning with only one out, tying the game at 3-3.

Arkansas reliever David Herndon (5-6) picked up the win, firing 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.

The Cards (28-34, 66-66) have now dropped two straight and five of their last six on the current road trip. Springfield will try to salvage a split in the four-game series, sending Scott Gorgen (3-4) to the mound on Monday night. The Travs will go with right-hander Tim Kiely (4-2) in the final game of the series, with game time scheduled for 7:10pm.

The Cards return to Hammons Field on Tuesday, September 1st, as they open the final home stand of the 2009 regular season. Tuesday night is a KRAFT Singles Tuesday Night Ticket Promotion, as you're invited to bring a KRAFT Singles wrapper to the Ticket Office and score a buy-one get-one ticket offer.
